Hot hatches

1
Good: Great performance from buzzy 1.4 TSI engine, very precise in corners, firm but forgiving ride, nicely weighted steering, impressively economical, available as a practical estate.
Bad: Not available with a manual gearbox, and DSG can hesitate exiting junctions, interior nothing special considering this is a vRS.
2
Good: Strong performance, manages to put its power down very cleanly, understated looks, great handling, relatively economical, forgiving ride. Chain cam engine.
Bad: Doesn't look very different from the standard Cupra.
3
Good: One of the best hot hatches around, great handling and poise.
Bad: Very hard ride is uncomfortable, not enjoyable to drive in traffic.
4
Good: Huge fun to drive with great handling, zesty performance from turbocharged 1.4-litre engine, plenty of scope for personalisation.
Bad: Rather bouncy ride, first cars only available with semi-auto transmission which isn't great in automatic mode, poor rear visibility.
5
Good: Great performance from Cooper S, much smoother and more sophisticated than first generation, capable of travelling distances in comfort.
Bad: 17-inch wheels with Sport suspension destroy both ride and road feel, air conditioning wasn't standard on models before January 2009.
6
Good: Characterful five-cylinder 2.5-litre engine. Rides and handles (and drifts) very well.
Bad: Not especially economical. Many used examples have been thrashed.
7
Good: Ferocious acceleration. Meaty steering. 163mph and 0-60mph in 5.6 seconds.
Bad: 20mpg in reality. Quaife diff requires getting used to.
8
Good: Very quick and outrageous fun, yet still emits a reasonable 165g/km and has potential for 40mpg, available as hatch, convertible and Clubman.
Bad: Doesn't like uneven surfaces, money spent on expensive options not likely to be seen again.
9
Good: Great steering and handling, futuristic looks, still practical and spacious inside, huge fun to drive.
Bad: Engine needs to be worked hard, firm ride, not enjoyable to drive in traffic, poor fuel economy.
10
Good: Great looking and desirable, sporty image, great MultiAir engines, much improved from 2011.
Bad: Driving experience of original MiTo doesn't match the looks. Much better from 2011.
