Estates
1
Good: Huge interior and load space, more legroom in the back than a Mercedes-Benz S-Class, clever touches throughout, well specified as standard and great value for money.
Bad: Visibility at the rear can be a bit restricted. Usual hesitation from DSG autos.
2
Good: Great to drive with a perfect blend of handling and ride comfort, top quality interior, very refined at high speeds, great engines including very efficient 520d.
Bad: There are other cars in the class with larger boot spaces.
3
Good: Refined and comfortable. 2.0 TDI model claimed 56.5mpg. More headroom than previous A6 Avant. Impressive interior. Some clever high-tech options. 3.0 BiTDI quattro stunningly quick and competent.
Bad: Mercedes E-Class Estate has a bigger boot. Less standard spec than before and options quickly add up to thousands. Makes used examples difficult to price.
4
Good: Impressively quiet and strong i-DTEC diesel engine, feels well built and reliable, high refinement and comfort levels, styling looks upmarket, lots of underfloor boot storage.
Bad: Petrol engines combined with automatic gearbox not as impressive.
5
Good: Distinctive and attractive looks, good quality feel to the cabin. Efficient 1.7-litre diesel engines. Good value and well equipped.
Bad: Long-legged manual gearbox seriously blunts performance.
6
Good: Very good to drive, exceptionally good 320d engine, practical loadspace, huge performance from 335i.
Bad: Still reports of turbo failures on 320d.
7
Good: Comfortable and easy to drive. More roomy than previous A4 Avant with up to 1,500 litres of space. 2.0 TDI engine suits it perfectly.
Bad: Original chain cam 160PS 1.8 TFSI engine is thirsty (later improved).
8
Good: Small efficient engines with the option of a tax-free diesel, smart looks, useful load area, reasonable list prices and decent ride comfort.
Bad: Legroom in the back is still tight and not really suitable for adults, CO2 (and money) saving start/stop technology only available on certain models, rather than across the range.
9
Good: Stunning looking and practical executive estate. At its best with quattro 4WD and the excellent 3.0 TDI engine.
Bad: Back seat not comfortable for three across.
10
Good: Bluemotion Technology model has impressively low emissions and high mpg, upgraded interior is an improvement on the previous model.
Bad: Not a MK VI Golf underneath despite the looks, legroom is tight in the back.
