Convertibles
1
Good: As sharp a drive as the coupe version, eye-catching looks and nice design details in the cabin. Good range of engines including economical TDI.
Bad: Appalling, gut wrenching ride ride on 19-inch wheels unless magnetic suspension is fitted. Blustery with top down. Noisy with top up.
2
Good: Incredibly smooth and refined. One of the best convertibles at minimising wind turbulance with the top down. Very well equipped as standard. Good ride. 640d from September 2011.
Bad: Other convertibles at this level have a folding hard-top roof.
3
Good: Elegant styling, little top-down turbulence, good selection of petrol and diesel engines, roof folds down (and up) on the move.
Bad: Not very exciting or involving to drive, awkward shaped boot,
cramped rear seats, springy manual gearchange, four-cylinder diesels
noisy with roof down.
4
Good: Refined open-top cruiser with a metal folding roof, classy interior design, sharper looks after 2010 facelift, strong diesel engines including D5.
Bad: Steering lacks feel, firm ride, boot space difficult to get to with the roof down.
5
Good: Neatly styled drop-top version of the Golf, quick-fold roof, frugal Bluemotion models available plus impressive TSI petrols.
Bad: Legroom is tight in the back.
6
Good: Stylish looks, impressive glass-panelled folding roof, comfortable and relaxing to drive, good quality interior, useable boot space, refined even with the roof down.
Bad: Fiddly sat nav and stereo, fairly pointless rear seats, emissions and fuel consumption of top dCi 160 on the high side.
7
Good: Good looks, wonderful exhaust note and excellent, fast-shifting 6-speed auto, revised interior from 2009 very stylish.
Bad: Small boot, ride on 20-inch wheels is too firm for most.
8
Good: Stylish and refined roadster coupe with folding hard top. Good performance from 6 cylinder engines.
Bad: Top sDrive35i engine is expensive.
9
Good: A great sports car, incredibly nimble, responsive steering, easy to live with day to day, comparatively inexpensive to run, roof is easy to fold down.
Bad: Limited cabin space, radiator requires special coolant, roof not electric.
10
Good: Highly desirable and very pretty, handles well even with the roof down, lower emissions than previous MINI Convertible, low depreciation, air conditioning now standard.
Bad: Options can easily add quite a lot to the final price.
