Compact Executive

1
Good: Superb to drive. Great handling and steering. Upmarket image. Economical diesel engines culminating in amazingly efficient 320d Efficient Dynamics at 109g/km of CO2.
Bad: Firm ride especially noticeable on larger alloys. No spare wheel. Limited rear legroom. Too many coil and injector problems on four-cylinder petrol engines.
2
Good: High quality interior with plenty of space. Excellent steering and handling. Available with quattro four-wheel drive. Frugal 2.0 TDI. Improved for 2012 with more efficient engines.
Bad: Very good, but doesn't handle quite as well as a BMW 3 Series. Chain cam 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI more reliable than belt cam diesels.
3
Good: Feels well built and robust, very comfortable and refined, high quality ride, a big improvement on the previous C-Class, good CDI diesels.
Bad: Looks are heavy rather than svelte and graceful, interior isn't very inviting, steering is precise but lacks feel.
4
Good: Stylish looks, good to drive, packed with safety kit including ‘City Safety’ as standard, Geartronic now has stop/start.
Bad: Decent handling comes at the expense of ride at times, CO2 emissions are only average for this type of car.
5
Good: Very well built. IS220d is economical. Top quality interior. Lexus dealers are the best in the business. Impressive refinement. All engines chain cam. IS250 Probably the most reliable car you can buy.
Bad: Poor change of manual gearbox and not suited to V6 petrol engine. Petrol IS250 thirsty. Ride and handling lag behind C Class, 3 Series and Mondeo. Rear seats don't fold.
6
Good: More of the same, modernised with sharper looks. Quick 2.8 twin-turbo.
Bad: Has lost the doctor/banker/solicitor image Saabs once had.
7
Good: Stunning looks, good handling. Five-star crash test rating. 2.4 JTDM is a great diesel. 200PS 1750 TBi petrol from 2010.
Bad: No spare wheel as standard. Problems with 1.9 diesel.
8
Good: Stylish alternative to the standard Passat. Coupe looks with plenty of rear passenger space. Quality improvements.
Bad: 3.6-litre V6 is thirsty and pricey.
9
Good: Compact Jaguar, launched as V6 only with four wheel drive. Held price well at first.
Bad: Mondeo-based and did not become Jaguar's 3 Series. Prices dropping by 2007. Production ended July 2009.
10
Good: Ultra exclusive, smart and understated looks, very comfortable and well finished interior, high standard equipment levels.
Bad: No diesel engine, limited dealer network.
