Cars that are Group One to insure

Good: Fun to drive and economical, based on the FIAT 500 but handles so much better it donated its suspension improvements to the 500. More room in rear than 500.
Bad: Diesel engine not worth the extra. Doesn't have character or cachet of 500. Never got TwinAir engine.

Good: Cheap to run. Group 1 insurance. 60mpg. handles well. Low list prices. Good Euro NCAP score. 2012 model emits just 99g/km CO2.
Bad: Reports of water leaks, clutches highly prone to failure due to water ingress. Quite a lot of problems from 3 years old.

Good: Compact and practical, enjoyable and easy to drive, narrow size makes it easy to park, good space for those in the back.
Bad: Double folding rear seats not standard, small boot.

Good: Cheap at less than £7k new, low CO2 emissions and high economy mean it's cheap to run, available with an automatic gearbox, nicer seats than near identical Suzuki Alto.
Bad: Low rent features like stalk adjustable door mirrors.

Good: Cheap to run, group 3 insurance, economical and perky 1.0-litre engine, fun to drive, decent cabin room even for taller drivers, ideal first car, four star Euro NCAP rating, 2012 model emits 99g/km CO2.
Bad: Not good for long motorway journeys, some reported problems with leaks.

Good: Decently built and good value, cheap to run. Greenline models are very economical with low CO2 emissions.
Bad: Dull image, smaller 1.2-litre petrol engine is lacklustre, not exciting to drive.

Good: Cute little Citroen C1 clone offering low emissions, low tax, good fuel economy and a proper 4-speed automatic option. Decent to drive. Congestion charge exempt from mid-2012.
Bad: Thrummy 3-cylinder engine. Not as sophisticated as a Hyundai i10.

Bad: Doors feel flimsy. Reports of water leaks.

Good: Solid, stylish-looking and decently equipped supermini. Decent handling and some strong, frugal engines.
Bad: Numb, overly light steering. Boot too narrow for standard size pushchair. Dash reflects in screen.

Good: Enjoyable and easy to drive. Easy to get in and out of. Peppy, chain cam engines. Good rear space. Best ride quality of any car its size.
Bad: Entry level models on small wheels don't look great.
