Toyota Road Tests
First, let’s get one thing straight. The Toyota Auris is pronounced “Owris”, like “Audi”, not “Ooris”. We can’t have you mismumbling the successor to the world’s best-selling car ever.
Tue, 16 Jan 2007
The 2013 Toyota Auris is lighter, lower and leaner than the 2007 – 2012 Auris it replaces, but is it significantly better?
Tue, 27 Nov 2012
The Toyota Auris has had some mid-life refreshment. The 124PS 1.6 is replaced by an excellent new 132PS Valvematic. The diesel is reduced to a 100PS 1.4. The mainstream model is a low emission 1.33. And now Toyota has extracted the drivetrain from its Prius to bring us a hybrid version.

It's not enough to just make an average car any more - so Toyota has given the Auris a serious overhaul to keep it competitive.
Mon, 29 Jun 2015
This is a catch-up to the Toyota Auris range test a year ago, where I never got a proper chance to drive what was then called the Auris T180 and is now called the Auris SR180.
Sat, 29 Mar 2008
A mid-life facelift has transformed the look of the Auris Touring Sport, but does its new BMW 1.6 litre diesel engine transform the car?
Sun, 19 Jul 2015
Toyota stretches the Auris’ appeal with the launch of a sleek and stylish estate. The compact load lugger promises low running costs and an impressive boot space, but does it live up to Toyota’s bold claims?
Wed, 03 Jul 2013
I ran an original 115PS Toyota Avensis D-4D for six months a couple of years ago. I wound up describing it as “an amiable thing. Does the job very well. And never, ever snaps back.”
Thu, 15 Jun 2006
This is the new, leaner, greener Toyota Avensis. With new, more powerful, and higher revving, yet more economical, lower emission petrol engines.
Fri, 05 Dec 2008
Mid life rejuvenation brings 119g/km CO2 2.0 D-4D, but the star of the range remains the 1.8i Valvematic Multidrive S

2003 Toyota Avensis D-4D Long Term Test: Final Instalment.
Wed, 31 Dec 2003
Sharper looks, new engines and better safety equipment boost the appeal of the revised Toyota Avensis.
Thu, 11 Jun 2015
The new Toyota Aygo set me thinking, it must be a tough life being a car designer these days.
Tue, 14 Feb 2006
Think Toyota Corolla and you think reliable but characterless. The new 5-door version looks like a Chinese die-cast model of a Skoda Fabia done from memory. And your first impressions confirm your prejudices.
Wed, 15 May 2002
There’s no doubt that mid-size MPVs have been getting better to drive. With the first generation, roll understeer on a bend could leave you with the frightening decision whether to let the thing stray onto the other side of the road or run the risk of rolling it.
Fri, 03 Sep 2004
Toyota's perfectly balanced sub £25k 200PS 2+2 coupe impresses both on the road and on the track.
Fri, 11 May 2012
I don’t know about you, but though the new Toyota Hilux was officially available in the UK from 1st October I have yet to see a road test. It was launched in Thailand, to much excitement, as the Hilux Vigo, in August 2004.

“I-Cute” doesn’t quite ring true. Pretty, it isn’t. This is a little car for the head, not the heart. A FIAT 500 is cute. A Hyundai i10 1.2 is a brilliant suburban buy. A Toyota IQ is probably the most sensible, practical city car on the planet.
Tue, 25 Nov 2008
Toyota's Land Cruiser LC is one of those niche cars that pretty much sells itself.
Thu, 12 Nov 2009
With the Mirai, Toyota has got closest to building a practical car that runs on pollution-free, infinitely renewable energy. HJ takes one for an afternoon drive.
Fri, 23 Oct 2015
The 2016 Toyota Prius is effectively an all new hybrid that's C Charge exempt without a plug and cable. HJ makes the case for it.
Wed, 10 Feb 2016
Drive into the future. Tomorrow’s car today. Car of the next decade now. We’ve all heard this kind of hype before. Except in the shape of the new Toyota Prius II it all happens to be true.
Sat, 29 Nov 2003
We’d been together for six months now and, though I’ve been unfaithful with scores of other cars in that time, I was still happiest with ‘my’ Toyota Prius.
Sun, 03 Oct 2004
I’ve had my Prius II T4 for more than three months, now. Not as long as Autocar and Auto Express have had theirs, but long enough to understand what this car of the future is all about.
Sun, 11 Jul 2004
Anyone who thought ultra-pragmatic Toyota had lost the commercial plot when it started making the petrol/electric Prius hybrid will probably have changed their minds by now.
Wed, 02 Dec 2009
The Prius gets an extended electric range of around 15 miles thanks to a new battery pack and a charging socket.
Thu, 26 Jul 2012
New Toyota Prius+ can carry 7, yet emits just 96g/km CO2 so is VED free and London Congestion Charge exempt, making it the ideal family car and an excellent taxi.
Sat, 23 Jun 2012
The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid delivers the same comfortable, easy-driving character of other Toyota hybrids, but in the form of a practical SUV.
Sat, 16 Jan 2016
The original Toyota RAV 4 was the first real ‘sports’ 4x4. It looked chunky, yet drove and handled like a Golf GTi. Not surprisingly, women loved it
Mon, 18 Nov 2002
Toyota's RAV-4 was beaten into its 4th generation by the Honda CR-V. How does it compare against other £20k - £30k SUVs?
Fri, 22 Feb 2013
After 4 months and only 1,850 miles my ‘long term’ RAV-4 D-4D 180 has now gone back to its maker.
Sat, 11 Nov 2006
Stepping out of a Yaris and into a Toyota RAV-4 is bound to give the wrong impression. I always remembered the old RAV as the sportiest of all the SUVs. Yet this big new RAV-4 D-4D 180 felt more like a Shogun.
Wed, 12 Jul 2006
The Soluna Vios is a very pretty Yaris-based four-door saloon built in Thailand for the Thai market. Thai Car of the Year 2004, sales have taken off to such an extent that most of the new cars with red plates you see on the streets of Bangkok are new Soluna Vios.
Thu, 01 Apr 2004
We’ve had our Toyota Soluna Vios for 39 months, and 80,000 kilometres, so I thought it was about time to sum up how it’s been.
Wed, 13 Jun 2007
The new Toyota Urban Cruiser is an oddball car. It’s chunky, without absorbing urban ruts, potholes and speed humps as well as a Qashqai on same size tyres.
Sat, 28 Mar 2009
Toyota has updated the Verso for 2014 with a new 1.6-litre diesel engine sourced from BMW. It means better economy and lower CO2 emissions.
Fri, 14 Feb 2014
Toyota's new Verso isn't actually new but a revamped version of the people carrier with sharper styling and more efficient engines. It remains a versatile and easy to drive MPV.
Mon, 28 Jan 2013
Toyota doesn’t do a Yaris Verso, a Corolla Verso and an Avensis Verso any more. Just one Toyota Verso, built at the Adapazari factory in Turkey.
Sun, 29 Mar 2009
'Empty Nesters' looking at Nissan Note, Citroen C3 Picasso, Honda Jazz, Hyundai ix20 and Kia Venga might well find exactly what they want in the new Toyota Verso S.
Thu, 17 Feb 2011
Not sold in Europe, South East Asia’s most popular car has been given a more prestigious look.
Fri, 12 Sep 2014
This is a return test of one of my favourite small cars, in special high value trim. In my view the Toyota Yaris is up there with the Jazz and the new Mazda 2 and basically does everything a small car should do, without any vices or irritations.
Fri, 14 Mar 2008
Toyota has revamped its Yaris with a new face, nicer interior and many other improvements. HJ checks it out.
Wed, 16 Jul 2014
When I was a kid I had a teacher called Harry Hawler who boasted that his Morris Minor would do fifty miles to the gallon. But even that was too profligate for Harry, so he rode to school most days on a noddy bike. Harry would have loved the Toyota Yaris D-4D.
Wed, 08 May 2002
Yaris Hybrid arrives at less than £15,000 and less than 80g/km CO2, making it tax and London Congestion Charge exempt for the forseeable future.
Tue, 29 May 2012
The bigger, better “bigsmall” second-generation Toyota Yaris has been around in other parts of the world for well over a year now.
Sat, 24 Jun 2006
Looks are everything. In dark metallic blue, with optional alloy wheels, the Toyota Yaris Verso almost looks okay. In pale metallic gold, like the one I had, anyone under the age of 50 would have to be extremely thick-skinned to drive one.
