Our cars: Mazda 5 1.6D TS2

20 December 2011: MPG Down Again
Mileage is now up to 7,500, and average economy down slightly, to 44.1mpg. Might be due to the colder weather.
But the car has an accurate odometer. A standard journey that usually reads 300 – 310 miles in anything else clocks up to just 294 miles in the Mazda. So that’s worth a couple of percentage points onto the fuel economy, pulling it back up to 45mpg.
The car remains a brilliant cruiser. The perfect gearing of around 30mph per 1,000rpm in 6th and the nicely stacked ratios make the most of its willing but not very powerful engine.
And I continue to revel in its comnbination of handling and ride comfort. It looks like a bus, ride like a limo and corners deliciously fluidly.
You can keep your rock hard 'sports' cars on ridiculous 35 profile tyres.
Give me a Mazda 5 1.6D TS2 any day.
