Our cars: Mazda 5 1.6D TS2

20 February 2012: Another small drop in mpg.

The Details

Current mileage 8,718
Average mpg 43.9

MPG of the Mazda 5 has dropped again, to 43.9 on Shell Fuelsave.

It was a bit worse: 43.8, but crept back up.

The falling figure could be due to long motorway stints on cruise control where you can watch current mpg drop into the 20s on the inclines with cruise locked at 70.

But, like the odometer, I think the Mazda's speedo is spot-on accurate and a lot more accurate than most cars, which is why, in 15 miles of 50 limit on the A1 and M1, I find myself overtaking quite a lot.

But the difference still only adds up to around 2%, and 2% of 43.9 is only 0.878, so it's still only averaging a genuine 44.

It's going back in April and I'm going to miss the superb combination of supple suspension, excellent steering and a very well matched engine and 6-speed transmission that gets the best of of 270Nm from 1,750 to 2,500rpm. It's turned me into a firm van fan.

What next?

Well, the ambitious application is in.  I'll have to wait and see if my dream becomes reality.
