11 February 2012: Snow at Last

The Details

Current mileage 14,050

At last, freezing temperatures, snow and ice arrived with a vengeance. Vindication my campaign to get as many people as possible to fit cold weather tyres.

I wasn't able to get the car out of the garage at this morning's minus 10C because it was blocked in. But I finally did manage to extract it for a trip to my favourite photo location on a ridge over the M3 near Chobham.

Not much snow, though.

But the minus 1C to minus 3C temperatures did allow the Michelin Alpins to show what they were all about.

Instead of the harsh rumble of summer tyres on a freezing road surface, the Alpins remained quiet and comfortable, with very impressive grip.

Trying hard on the snow it was, of course, possible to unstick them. But they didn't want to.

Though I hate snow with a passion, I found myself wishing for more of the stuff, just to play with the car on it.

Unfortunartely, that wish may be granted.

I'm also happy to report that, having been left alone again for another month, the FIAT started first time and ran very sweetly indeed.

Its next service and MoT is coming up March/April.

Its latest tax disc arrived in the post this morning after applying for it online on Wednesday.

Average mpg is down a bit to 44.6 from over 55 in the summer, but that's down to some fairly hard driving and some monster traffic jams over Christmas.
