Kia reveals 365PS, Audi S5-rivalling Stinger

Published 09 January 2017

Kia has revealed its most powerful model ever – the Stinger. Set to go on sale in the UK before the end of 2017, it will compete with the Audi S5, but with a more competitive price of less than £40,000.

That’s still a lot for a Kia, but final prices are to be confirmed, plus there will be less powerful versions with more affordable pricing on sale after the initial launch.

From launch there will be two engines choices – both turbocharged petrols. The entry-level engine is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with 255PS and peak torque of 350Nm, while the more potent 3.3-litre V6 produces 365PS and 510Nm.

Figures for the 2.0-litre engine are to be announced, but the 3.3 V6 has a top speed of 167mph, with 0-62mph taken care of in 5.1 seconds. Drive is sent via an eight-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels as standard, with all-wheel drive as an option – though the announced specifications are for US cars and may differ in the UK.

A large amount of high-strength steel is used in the body which, along with advanced multi-link rear suspension, adjustable damping and configurable drive modes, should make the Stinger capable through corners.

In terms of size, the Stinger has a longer wheelbase than the Audi A4 and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, so should provide ample cabin space for both front and rear seat passengers, along with a useable boot.

Up front the cabin has a classy layout, dominated by three turbine-style air vents and a large touchscreen system. Technology includes forward collision assistance, lane keep assistance, blind spot detection, a head up display, a wireless smartphone charger and, optionally, a 720W Harman/Kardon audio system.

UK-specific details on engines and equipment are likely to be announced in Summer 2017, ahead of sales starting in Autumn.
