Scrappage Survivors and Big Bargains at Auction today

Reports that late 1990s cars had all but disappeared due to scrappage seem to have been greatly exaggerated. You couldn’t move for them at auction today.

The more desirable were making quite strong money. Yet there were plenty of bargains to be had.

It was nice to see a couple of girls drive away in a clean enough 2000W Peugeot 206 1.4LX 3-dr for £650, £300 below trade book. There were plenty of other good private buys, like a 95k mile 02 Mondeo 2.0LX for £1,400 (just check those swirl flaps), a 127k mile 2004/54 Vauxhall Vectra 1.8LS for £1,500s, a clean 56k mile 97R Nissan for just £350. £100 bought a 101k miles 2000W FIAT Brava 1.6 100SX 5-dr.

A 97k mile 2000X Mercedes SLK 320 auto didn’t sell for a top bid of £4,750, so buyers certainly won’t throwing their money away and neither were vendors giving them away. But what a buy that would have been had it come.

There was a fair old fight for a 39k mile 2004/54 BMW 745iL 4.4 auto, that eventually sold for £12,600s, more than £3,000 below book, which tends to suggest some adjustment is needed in the books for the big stuff. Unless there’s a retail buyer ready and waiting it’s a big risk these days,

More 2007/56 Foxtons R56 MINI Coopers came under the hammer: the 58k miler sold for £7,000 and the 37k miler for £7,700.

Yet a 70k mile 2001X Chrysler PT Cruiser 2.0 Ltd made a significant  £1,975. Maybe they are acquiring ‘classic’ status.
