Uninsured Drivers

If you find yourself the victim of an accident with an uninsured driver, however, don't despair. The Motor Insurers' Bureau - of which all insurance companies must be a member - was created in 1946 and enters into agreements with the Government to protect victims of uninsured drivers or those who cannot be traced.
All members contribute to the fund from which these claims are settled and share their information on the Motor Insurance Database that was set up in 2001 in an attempt to combat the rising number of uninsured drivers. The MID also supplies insurance details to the police for Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) checks. The Motor Insurers' Bureau is a fund of last resort and will consider claims for property damage and injury where compensation cannot be claimed from another source. Further information and details of how to claim can be viewed on their website (www.mib.org.uk).

But don't forget, if you give any false details - such as age, medical condition, conviction history, car details - to your insurance company, then your policy could be classed as invalid if you ever have the need to claim and you would join the ranks of the uninsured.
