Probably Morgan.

Discovery, Range Rover or Jaguar - their engines are built in Dagenham, the rest in Solihull or Birmingham.
|
There is the BMW Mini. I suppose the Astra must be one of the most affordable cars built in the UK?
Are the engines made in the UK?
When I buy my next family type car, I want to get one that has the highest local content

Only the diesels-gasoline at Bridgend(along with Aston Martin motors)

Likely to be ones of the kit-cars: Noble (don't they still use a souped-up Mondeo engine?) etc. Not the Caterham 7 as I think it uses the Toyota 1.8 VVTi.
|
|
Thinking about this question, the Swindon-built Honda Civic could be a contender, I know some of the electronics come from abroad but the body, engine etc is UK built AFAIK.
|
|
Toyota.
The Burnaston plant is the global production centre for the Avensis, and built the 5 door Auris and Auris Hybrid. With the new Auris now in production, Burnaston is the European centre for producing all Auris hatchbacks and the new Auris Hybrid. The Toyota plant on Deeside produces the engines for the Avensis, the Auris and the Auris Hybrids.

But how much value is imported from Japan and elsewhere - certainly the transmissions and the electronics.

RR Evoque at Halewood? The engines are Ford ecoboosts but I don't know if they're Bridgend-made or Ohio-made.
|
|
Most Freelanders and Evoques are diesel - and it's PSA in France who build the 4-cyl diesels as part of the Ford/PSA engine alliance.

Well, they cast the block, head and bolt the parts together.
But all the expensive goodies (turbo and CR fuel system, and possibly the pistons will be bought in.
Then you have to consider the-arguably more important-intellectual provenance of the car. ie where it was designed. These are the sorts of jobs we want to be encouraging rather than low grade production line work
To be honest, it's very difficult to determine "how British" a complex product is.

Agreed - in protectionist countries, like USA, there are official measures of "local content" as they have to meet regulatory minimums - made difficult as many imported assemblies contain components from different countries.
It's made even more complicated because some materials are made from imported raw materials.

The same applies to Morgan (BMW and Ford engines and transmissions), Jaguar/Landrover (ZF automatic transmissions), etc.

Also the tyres are from Michelin Spain and the manual is printed in Japan
|
|
The Astra is mostly built from parts made abroad (Spain, Portugal, Germany), that is why the Vaxhaul plant was considered at threat

Ellesmere Port is the lead plant for Astra and all it's world-wide derivatives.
GM Europe has excess capacity due to the major downturn in European car sales - the reason Ellesmere Port is being considered for closure, not for the first time, is that French and German governments and trades unions make it much harder to close plants there - having closed the Belgian plant because it's easiest/cheapest then Ellesmere Port is the next easiest/cheapest to close.

ot for the first time, is that French and German governments and trades unions make it much harder to close plants there - having closed the Belgian plant because it's easiest/cheapest then Ellesmere Port is the next easiest/cheapest to close.
There was a program that analysed the cost of each plant and cost of closure, they flagged the fact the the cost of importing parts put the plant at Elesmere Port at a disadvantage. The productivity of the plant was greater in UK then the additional cost of making workers redundant in Germany
Opel have plants in Spain and Poland also although I did not know they had plants in France.

They don't - I was thinking of PSA where the same thing happened.

Not the Caterham 7 as I think it uses the Toyota 1.8 VVTi.
The Caterm Seven uses the Ford Duratec and Ford Sigma in most models. Think the entry level version still uses the Rover K Series, they probably bought a ship load when Rover went bang.

My S-Type is thoroughly British in every way of course. Except for the parts which are American. But America was Britain once so it's the same thing.

Most parts of the world were "British" once upon a time.

Exactly so practically everygood is ours. Unless it's not good, then it's theirs.
|
|
In days largely gone by, whichever car won the most UK content you'd want to avoid it like the plague!
A generation on, it just goes to show how foreign management and investment can make buyers chase the outcome of British labourers' products. Hey ho.

Are we even allowed in these days of rule from Brussels to even think about buying patriotically? I would imagine its considered right-wing and extremist, probably a law against it.

It's a moral requirement in France and Germany to buy patriotically - why else would they build French cars ?

I have had my CRV a few weeks, Swindon assembly
Autobox Japan
Radio/SatNav Thailand
Seatbelts - Chinese
Lots of Electrical stuff seems to be Far East - cannot read it / remember where
Odd bit of Bosch but cannot see Allemagne, so may be Bosch Far East
Car mats - Holland IIRC
Car boot Tray - Sweden
Engine and Chassis, Seats are UK - UK seems to be the only bits of UK origin easily seen. There may well be other bits but not immediately obvious.

............and they probably pay their corporation tax in the Republic of Ireland?

Forgot to say.....................
The Tyres are 4 x DUNLOPS!
Fort Dunlop / Birmingham/ Rule Britannia????
Before you get the Flags out..........they are made in Japan - I believe Dunlop Tyres is a Brand owned by Bridgestone
|
|
"I believe Dunlop Tyres is a Brand owned by Bridgestone"
Dunlop were bought by Sumitomo in the 1980's.
In 1999 joint ventures were formed between some parts of Dunlop and some parts of Goodyear. Goodyear Dunlop Tires Europe which manages the joint venture in Europe.
In the same year, and after lying derelict for 20 years or so, Fort Dunlop was bought by a development company and has been redeveloped into office, retail space and a travelodge.

Seats are UK
I thought that Seats were made in Spain.......?
|
|
So to replace my Mondeo I should consider a Toyota Avensis, or a Honda CRV?
|

Ford haven't produced a Ford car in the UK since the Escort died in 2002.

Ford haven't produced a Ford car in the UK since the Escort died in 2002.
And the only Vauxhall cars built in the UK since 2008 have been Astras.
|
|
And soon no more vans either. I still find it strange that Toyota, Nissan and Honda can produce cars profitably in the UK and yet Ford can't.
