Is there any way of knowing whether a Peugeot 309 starter motor from the scrapyard will fit on a Talbot Horizon 1987 1.3? The local shop has a brand one in stock for £50 but I wondered whether its worth taking a trip to the scrappers?

I've been advised that even if they look similar on the outside, the "teeth" may not be the same internally so you just can't tell until you try it - anyone have any further ideas on this?

Cheers!

Well for a start there are no 87 Horizons. What is the right date?

I don`t know where you live, but you must have auto electricians in your area that can easily repair your existing unit for less than £50. The main problems are worn brushes or end bushes/bearings, that can be replaced quite cheaply.

Sorry - its a 1985.

We're in the West Yorkshire area, so Im not sure if anyone does the reconditioning around here. I'll do a search in Yell.co.uk.

thanks

Some facts from my Haynes manual, which are only a partial answer ...

The 85 Horizon diesel shared the same engine with the 87 309 diesel.

The manual doesn't say anything about the Horizon 1.3 petrol engine, but it is a good guess it had the same engine as the 309 1.3 petrol.

The Horizon/309 diesel had a "Mitsubishi/Melcro" starter. The petrol engine had any of "Paris-Rhone", "Ducellier", "Bosch" or "Mitsubishi" starters.

The diesel's "Mitsubishi/Melcro" starter is a different design to the petrol's "Mitsubishi" starter.

The manual doesn't say explicitly that the four petrol designs are interchangeable, but by ommission and context, it implies they are.

It has even less to say about whether the diesel starter is interchangeable with the petrol ones. I would be wary about this.

So if you do decide to get a starter from a breaker's, get an agreement for return if it doesn't work.

It's fair bet the diesel starter will be different. For a start, most diesel versions use a starter motor which produces a much higher torque than the petrol engine to overcome the higher compression. It will pull a much higher starting current too. The engine block and hence the mounting may also be different.

Patricia,

I think that the two starters will be the same basic type but they could differ in the number of teeth on the gear and/or the position of the gear along the shaft.

It might be easiest to ask a starter motor dealer (either the shop that you mentioned, or an auto electrician) if the 'service replacement' part number is the same for both cars. Often the original part numbers on things like this are different but one 'replacement' part services more than one car.

This took a bit of research, and I'm not sure why I bothered, but the Peugeot 309 1.3 did indeed use the rattly old ex-Simca engine from the Horizon. I suppose Peugeot felt that, having bought Talbot, they might as well try and salvage something from the wreckage.

You learn something new every day. I think Dizzy's advice is good - the French have a perverse approach to motor engineering, and it wouldn't surprise me if they changed the starter design at some point.

Thanks Gents - its very much appreciated! Im glad you did put the effort in as it means I have a few more options before buying the part brand new!

I'll have a look at motor dealers in my area - will all "auto electricians" provide recon starter motors or do i need to look at a specialist person?

thanks again!

Stop Press!

Excellent advice on the repairing! I've just spoke to an autoelectric shop near me who quoted between £18-25 to mend the motor, taking about 2 1/2 hours. Hopefully we'll be able to get it off the engine today and have it going again in no time!

Thanks again - saved me about 30 quid!
