Mk2 Golf front upper strut bearings

Mk2 Golf front upper strut bearings - Caspar
I,ve failed the MOT on these bearings. Can anyone tell me if you need to remove the suspension strut to replace them or not. The workshop manual isn,t very clear on this.

yes you will need to remove the strts to change these.
yhey are more commonly called the top mounts and are a usual faliure on all golfs at mot time.
to change remove top nut under plastic cover on inner wings, then the two lower bolts holding strut to hub carrier firstly scoreing round the outline of the strut on the hub carrier so you don't change the camber. remove strut and fit spring compressers to enable you to remove top mount. voila! should be around £10 from any independent vw parts place. allow 1 hour to do per side.

If i were you i would pay a little extra and get the top mounts from a VAG dealer. the Febi pattern top mounts i used once in the past were not up to much. I removed them after only 6 months.

The same happened with the mk3 top mounts i got from german and swedish, they weren't as good as the genuine vw ones.
