my new model mondeo 2.0 lx 2001 on 75000 miles has an extremelly annoying boot rattle which gets worse when the weather is cold???. dealer as usual is hopeless. It sounds like the actual tailgate is moving and after 8 hours driving it drives me insane.Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

My new shape 1.8LX (20,000 miles) has developed same kind of rattle, not noticed if it's worse when weather is cold, it sounds exactly as u describe, as if the tailgate isn't shut properly or the latch is loose, I can't be a***d taking it to the dealer as you rightly say, they're b***** useless. Why I keep buying Ford god alone knows!
If anyone comes up with a solution there's a pint in it for u!

I had a rattle on an Astra in the past. I got my fingers under the bootlid while it was closed and pulled and twisted it. The rattle noise happened while doing this.
All it needed was some grease on the lock catch. Don't put too much on though, or your shopping will get a nice coat of grease when you put it in the boot.

Keith S. Thanks for advice. The noise is from inside tailgate and is VERY loud.

peterperfect I will keep you posted as the car is going to a dealer for service on 9th Jan. Death threats will be made to them if rattling not fixed as I have to spend all day in this vehicle. I think I heard somewhere that there could be design fault and that it can be cured by shoving rubber pads inside the tailgatet If not fixed by dealer than I will resort to ripping tailgate to bits myself!

I have fixed the rattle today!!!!. Took 2 hours fiddling and about 10 rest runs down bumpy roads. All that is requires is a torx drive to loosen the three bolts holding the tailgate latch to the car.If you push tailgate from the back of car firmly you can check if there is movement. It was not rattling trim as I suspected but the tailgate moving!.
After latch adjusted no noise at all. Thank goodness. I was ready to set fire to the damn thing.

Thanks for the update, but i'm not sure which bit you've adjusted, do you mean the latch itself on the tailgate or the bit it locks onto when you shut it?
I hope the same remedy cures my prob, please get back to me so i know which bit to fiddle with.
Thanks in advance.

Sorry about delay replying but have been working away for past week. To stop rattle I used a torx drive to loosen tailgate latch on car body (not those on tailgate).I found that if you push latch down and very slightly to one side it appears to hold tailgate more securely.(if you push tailgate inwards below number plate you can feel slight movement if not adjusted correctly)
This would appear to be a design fault as every mondeo I have owned has done this.
Hope this helps-its a small but very annoying problem!!!

I have been facsinated to read this thread, and extremely relieved. We bought a new Mondeo last year and thought we were imagining this rattle because it was very intermittent. So pleased to gather that someone else thought it was weather dependant, because we have now established it is only evident when the external temperature is below ~6 degrees C.
"Cal g", is your rattle still cured? I would appreciate some feedback after some further low temperatures.
I hope you have identified the problem though, cos the rattle is driving me insane too!! We've been riding round with no parcel shelf for weeks, peering into the boot, to see if we can work out where it is coming from - with no luck so far.

Hi there,
I have exactly the same problem. I spent a couple of hours last night trying to adjust the boot catch, it only got worse. What exactly did u do to resolve the rattle?

Robin

I thought Ford would have fixed the rattling boot issue by Mk3. It happened to Mk1 and 2 and the rattle was listed on TSB.
|
Where can I find the TSB's online?

I had the dreaded tailgate rattle on my 2001 mondeo. It only happened in sub zero temperatures and would vanish once the interior of the car was well warmed up. I've traced it to the rubber bump stops which are rivetted to the sides of the boot.
These become very hard when cold, and instead of flexing as the car drives over bumps they make a loud noise against the rear wing.
I cured the problem by bending them slightly away from the body and applying some petroleum jelly behind them.
Since I did this the rivets have come slightly loose, but my tailgate no longer rattles in cold weather.

My 2001 Mondeo saloon has a dual latching system on the boot lid, I don't know if the hatchback does but, if you have adjusted the latch pin too far down then the lock may only be on the first latch. This will make it rattle more. Try adjusting it back a little and make sure it is central in the latch slot.

Ford technical service bulletin No.014/2001 refers to this problem. It affects cars produced up to 16.01.2001.
The side bump stops are made from a hard material and should be replaced by a new version.
As all new shape Mondeos are under three years old it should be covered under warranty.
Also if you have trouble with the centre rear seat belt reels jamming this is covered by bulletin No.26/2001 and would also be covered under warranty.
