Pretty sure its what Ford call the Duratec i.e. the Mazda clone.

cheers - was hoping so. I have experience of the old zetec and although characterful and fairly pokey, its not refined or particularly flexible....

I think the old Zetec SE engine was a fine unit, in fact better than the 1.6 duratec in our current car.

Roly - my experience of the zetec se as fitted to 03 -00 Mondeos is that it's not a bad engine. Some aspects such as general reliability are excellent. I also really enjoyed the rorty induction noise at medium revs when under load. I just didn't think the rev range was wide enough - it got breathless past 4000rpm which isn't what I expected from a 16 valve motor.

Very low rev performance was very uneven and it was noisy at cruising speed too. Although I've never driven the Mazda engine, I much prefer the idea of Japanese engineering in a Volvo than oldish Ford technology.

Interestingly, I always thought that, given its relatively low output, the yamaha-engineered duratec was highly rated?

I'm very pleased with the Duratec HE 1.8 in my 05 Mondeo - same engine as the S40 and V50 1.8. It's a Mazda MZR design, built by Ford. Goes easily as well as the 1.8VVT Vectra I had before, and the Vectra was supposed to be 140hp, the HE is 125hp. The Vectra got marginally better MPG than the Mondeo (37mpg compared to 33mpg).

It's got 70k on the clock now, and only engine fault I've had is the aux belt tensioner died last week. Didn't leave me stranded, just stopped the power steering from working properly. The engine uses no oil at all between services, and is totally silent at idle now the tensioner is replaced.

The Duratec HE is far and away a better engine than the other smaller Duratecs, which are all older Sigmas or Zetecs with a different badge. The 1.6 "Duratec" is the same old junk from the Mk1 Focus, which should have been taken out and shot long ago IMHO.

Is that old mill still lumbering along as a bargain basement option?]

My dad had one in a Focus estate. With sensible gearing, it might have been passable, but Ford mated it to a very high ratio gearing (not just fifth) and it was a slug.

The Mk 1 Focus used the Iron blocked Zetec E in 1.8 and 2.0 litre versions, the 1.6 were the all alloy Zetec SE Fiesta/Puma engine (Yamaha designed unit). There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of those engines, totally reliable and will do galactic miles.

The Mk 2 Focus (and C-Max) used the same 1.6 but the 1.8 and 2.0 were the all alloy Duratec which is the Mazda derived engine. Ok its lighter than the Zetec E and a little more powerful but that does not make the older engine a dog. Its these later all alloy engines that are fitted in the V40/V50.

When the Zetec 1.8 originally came out in the Mk5 Escort I hated it, so overgeared that it made motorway driving a chore. Never had this problem with any Focus I have driven.

This was the all alloy engine. There wasn't much 'wrong' with the engine apart from some cheap ancillary parts (coil pack and starter motor c***ped out at a fairly young age) but it wasn't as lively as GM's ecotec engine.

NB: Oops, the swear filter doesn't work in parentheses. I'd better censor myself!

33mpg - oof - that might be a deal breaker. I was expecting nearer 40 from this unit in an s40......

I think you'd do very, very well to get 40mpg on average. Best I've had from the Mondeo over a tank was 42mpg, and that was on a long, slow journey the length of Ireland, basically the ideal trip. Worst over a tank was 17mpg, that was over the deep freeze last winter, doing short commutes in the snow.

I had the 2.0 MZR in a mazda 6; 4 speed auto

Long motorway journeys would give me around 40 (best was 42mpg)

Normal driving (60% A roads and motorways/40% city) returned around 33mpg
