on depressing clutch pedal, pedal dropped as if cable had snapped A,A called out and advised that a ratchet on the pedal had stripped it`s splines can anyone shed any light on it (grandaughters car AGAIN!!!) p.s he also mentioned it was made of bakerlite .

The clutch mechanism on these is hydraulic,no cable.Recently had a similar experience on my sons car.The clutch slave cylinder in the geabox had failed.Also possible that master cylinder has collapsed.hth

Well, what do the AA know about cars these days.

Not bakelite, but possibly nylon or some similar plastic chosen for the specific application. Normally as good or better than a similar metal component built to the same cost.

Problem with the Corsa is, the slave cylinder and thrust bearing are expensive.

Problem 2 is, they're both inside the bell housing next to the clutch plate.

So take it easy, slow and smooth is the way, as when they need fixing, you can expect to lose either an arm and a leg, or several days of your life fixing the damn thing.
