I'm in the market for a used Passat Estate (petrol, 2.0, 130bhp) for about £2k, so the car will probably be circa 2002. I've read a few conflicting comments about when the timing belt should be changed, some people are saying every 40k/4years. What is not clear is whether that interval applies to all engines.

My other question is whether the water pump should also be changed at the same time for the 2.0 130 engine?

Can anyone shed some light? Thanks in advance!
