Yoyota - Oil - P.Mason {P}

I poured about a quarter of a litre of Castrol Diesel oil into my petrol car in error when topping up the oil. Is this likely to cause problems? What's the difference between oil for petrol engines and diesels anyway?

Diesel lube oil has a higher detergent content but I doubt it will do any harm. Check the specification on the can it will quite likely be OK for yours.

Older diesels tend to dump a lot of carbon into the oil which got very dirty hence the high detergent, modern diesels burn a lot cleaner and also produce a lot more power so the specifications are changing.

Thanks, Peter, tht's reassuring to know. The quantity was very small,probably less than I thought. (My engine probably needed a clean anyway! It's a 2000 Corolla, 84K miles.)
