Vintage VW Golfs - Startor Motor compatibility - tdc

I have here in my possession a starter motor from a 1980 1.6 Golf GTi,does anyone know if it would fit a 1979 1.5LD 1495cc manual?Please don`t respond with "try it and see" as the starter is in Blighty and the car in Oz..... :)

Hmm, diesels normally have a gruntier starter.

Yup, says here that the 1.6 GTi is fitted with either a 0.7 or 0.8kw starter.

The 1.5D models get one of two units, both of 1.7kw.

Thus, on the balance of probability I'd have to say no. It'd probably fit, but I doubt it would be effective.
