Audi a4 2008(not new shape) 1,9 Tdi SE - White smoke - tonnoir

Took a 2008 Audi A4 1.9 Tdi for a test drive. No smoke apparent at start up but about 2 mins into the drive when we stopped at a set of lights we noticed a lot of white/grey smoke coming from exhaust. As we contined the test drivev(approx 30 mins) there was no further smoke.

Is the smoke something to be worried about?

Seriously?

White/grey smoke is unburned fuel. Yes it is a problem-don't buy it.

Could be a whole stack of things to worry about. eg Head gasket, or poor compression somewhere. White/grey smoke on a diesel denotes very poor combustion usually.

Its strange it went away though, are you sure it wasn't just still cold ?

It's about 15C in most of Britain right now. Hardly a difficult cold start. Problems with cold starting are normally precursers to problems with hot running.

TDIs take about 5 miles to warm up.

But as it's a diesel, white smoke when cold is VERY unusual.. mine never did.

Try another one. Run away... Could be a leaking head gasket..Who knows?

Eeew. Do not buy it!! White smoke can be from lots of things; glow plugs if you're starting off (esp. cold) or some contamination like a wee bit of petrol in your diesel. Or, your fuel pump isn't working properly.
