Have Cars got too boring and impractical - JohT

I am in the process of looking for an estate type car to replace my car/van combination but my trips round the car supermarkets, dealers and auctions is leaving me cold, they are all beginning to look the same, and never mind if you can't get anything through the tailgate so long as it looks rounded off, the colours don't help, hea*** black, or silver mostly, even worse when you get inside, vision to the rear for reversing is appalling, facing forward not much better with massive facias and sloping windows, like peering through a tank slit ! i know much of this is due to safety etc but surely it needen't be this bad !

I tend to agree - especially about the view out, I guess this is why SO many cars are getting sensors on the back and even the front, not forgetting the latest in thing of the 360 degree camears

what about the astra estate - thats still fairly "square"

I was starting to compose a new thread along similar lines. Are we starting to see the end of what I would call "real" estate cars i.e. practical wagons that can carry big Stuff?

New ones now seem to be "sportwagons" with rounded corners, poor load capacity both volume and weight, with sport suspensions and low profile tyres that clunk over anything worse than dead flat tarmac ... moan, moan ...

Gone full circle, at one time if you wanted a proper estate you bought a Volvo or Mercedes.

Then the other makers go it on the act, and cars like 406, C5, Vectra (huge), Mondeo Avensis, made superb practical and good value estates.

The latest models are now some sort of fashion statement, still roomy but have lost versatility through that rounded back end and half moon access , back to MB, BMW and Volvo then if you want a proper estate, and one or two others.

Glad i'm not the only one who doesn't like peering through onside arrow slits, and the getting towards horizontal windscreen with huge A pillars.

In the interests of safety cars are getting more and more blindspots with thick pillars to make them stronger. However, this makes accidents more likely, so to make cars safer pillars become thicker. I can see a vicious circle developing here. Other consequences of cars becoming safer are the inabilty to be able to fit your car in a single garage and open the door to get out and get out once parked in a supermarket car parking space!

I read a report about a year ago from some University which compared an 80s Ford Escort to a 2008 Vauxhall Astra i think, and they concluded visability all round for the driver is vastly restricted in the Astra in comparison to the Escort. All the safety equipment, high windows, thick airbagged doors, strong pillars etc means in the Astra you're more likely to have an accident but also more likely to survive it. Of course in the Escort you're less likely to have an accident (cos you can see more out of it) but more likely to die or sustain serious injury should you have one.

Cars are now bigger than they used to be (the new Mondeo is a full foot longer than the last generation Cortina) to accomodate all this, the styling of a big backside and sloping front is dictated by EU safety regulations to make it hug pedestrians and it ultimatley means most cars end up pretty much the same. The likes of Ford, Vauxhall etc all look pretty much the same. Even the likes of BMW and Mercedes are blending in, mainly due to being more accessible than they used to be and now more common. It means often if you want something which looks a bit different you have to go for something which can largely bypass these rules, like an American car, or something in a bizarre colour.

When Volvo had the 240 estate out years ago they were chastised for producing a box on wheels. It was a load swallower, pretty it wasn't but practical and lasted years.....I'd have one now if they made em again.

I am coming to the UK to work on a contract and I have a choice of a company car or money instead I have looked at the available cars and really none inspire me.I have a BMW 520 of my own a few years old now but I always enjoy driving it.At the present I am travelling in Germany in a 407 1.6hd1sw a absolute nothing of a car does what it says on the box but no character at all.

I think as I only need a small car a Suzuki Swift or a Mitsubishi Colt will fit the bill or a Chevrolet Lacetti estate seems extremely good value for money and I would have quite a bit over from my allowance if I went that route, mondeo man I am not
