Mercedes Sprinter Van 218 - Repairs after Warranty Has Expired - Ironside

Hi there, I'm hoping someone may have an answer for me. First of all I will try and explain my situation as simply as possible. Basically, I purchased a new Mercedes sprinter van back in 2007. At the end of 2009 I had to get the Mercedes garage out to fit a new starter motor. Within a few months the vehicle was showing signs that the starter motor was malfunctioning again. I obviously contacted the garage again and they took my vehicle in but could not find any problems with it, although they themselves have experienced the car not starting on a couple of occasions. Anyway, they gave me the vehicle back but intermittently, the problem still happened. And then a week ago it completely packed up again. I contacted the garage and they told me that the warranty was out of date on the starter motor because it had been fitted within the three year warranty of the van. So I have had the second starter motor fitted at a cost of £500. What I'd like to know is if I have any consumer rights because I reported this fault before the warranty was up and the garage and able to find it, but it was obvious it was still there.

£500.00 to supply and fit a starter motor? And you paid it?

Warranty is up however mercedes may offer a good will gesture if you moan enough to them & knock off 70% as other dealers can do.

Parts fitted within a warranty period are normally only covered till the expiry of the warranty.Parts fitted that you have paid for normally come with 12 month guarantee.

Warranty on warranty repairs seem to be a bit of a grey area.

However, get another dealer! £500 to change a starter is daylight robbery. The starter costs £70 and i'm assuming takes no more than an hour to fit.

A Mercedes starter for £70! Someone else was quoted £860 for an electric wing mirror and housing a few weeks ago which is steep but doesn't suprise me.

A new starter is available for £274. Why you paid £500 for a S/H one is crazy, even with fitting included. Regards Peter

I'd just had a quick look on ebay for some sprinter starters - £70 or less for a new one. Perhaps they are not genuine parts though. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=sprinter+starter&_sacat=See-All-Categories
