Ford escort 1990 1300cc - Changing rear brake cylinders - Delysher

My rear brake cylinder was leaking.

How long does it take to change each of the rear brake cylinders and do I need new rear brake shoes due to contamination ?

How long is a piece of string?

Could be an hour could be a weekend, much depends on good old corrosion. If the brake pipe connection comes undone then it's a simple task, assuming the slave cylinder securing bolts (or clips?) come free too.

Unfortunately with brake pipes nothing is written in stone, the pipe may twist off, and the next section may too and from experience you can end up fitting new brake pipes half way down the car before you get to an easy undo joint.

If the brake shoes have become contaminated i would replace them, they should be very cheap from a factor anyway, not worth the trouble of doing the work and leaving manky shoes on.

Give the other brake bleed valves a little dash of releasing fluid such as plus gas, this can be soaking in over the next few days whilst waiting to do the cylinder....check to see if the bleed valves undo before you go to the factor for the parts you need...you may need the other cylinder if it snap's off.

Gordonbennet, I agree with you 100%,way back to the master cylinder.

A trick I used if it looked like the pipes stood a chance of twistingwas to remove the cylinder bolts & pull the pipe through the backplate, knock out the piston & seals, put a tommybar through the hole & holding the pipe union nut turn the tommybar.

This was done on a Cortina of about the same vintage as the car in question albeit a long time ago.

Best of luck, I think you will need it.

heh heh...mind you at one time you'd have stopped at the point you knocked out the old seals, examined the bores and if OK replaced the spongy/split seals with new ones...money didn't grow on trees in those days.

Still got the thorny problem of loosening those bleed valves though..;)

Let us know how you get on OP.

I understand that replacement seals are unabtainable these days & a complete new cylinder has to be fitted.

If this is correct the new cylinders come comeplete with bleed valves & fixing screws so the old one need not be removed.

Anyhow once the old cylinder has been separated from the pipe the bleed screw can be gripped in a vice & the said T bar can be used .

If the bleed screw breaks there is still nothing lost as it would have broken in any case.

This is a ford escort the most easiest car to fix, so the brake pipe breaks make another and fit it & the cylinder is held on with 2x 10mm spanner bolts sometimes only one bolt hole.

Don't fit a seal kit as the bore wears and these cylinders are so cheap anyway.

If your in doubt about the brake pipes renew them.

A 2hr job to do both sides.
