Nicest sub-5k, 50mpg diesel auto to drive? - AllFumbs

I love piloting my 20-odd-year-old Saab 900S automatic; but it loves filling-stations.

So I'm looking for a used diesel auto that's not thirsty but is still a driver's car: you know what I mean. Top-speed not important but mid-range overtaking-urge is.

Not over-fussed about high insurance-group. I'm 'old' now and ins'ce-cost isn't an issue.

Opinions/experiences? Thank you, all.

Not sure as you'll top 50mpg unless on a journey but BMW 320d would be a good choice, though at that budget factor in a couple of hundred quid to get the swirl flaps removed, lovely drive to boot.

There's bigger engined models too, if you want to trade lower mpg for a larger cruiser.

MB would be considerable too, except their quality went west, whether it's back now the jury is still out on.

PSA auto Diesels, 406/7, 607 and C5.

Volvo S60/80.

Vectra/Saab 93, Mondeo.

Audi auto's don't seem to live forever but others may know different.
