Rover 214 si - trouble with my first car, help ! - MJR Lewis

Loving this car , more than i really expected for a first car tbh

only one thing is spoiling it , it seems there is some issue with the stereo , without the engine on but with the key turned to first position the stereo works perfectly (I got a new head unit as the car did not have one) all speakers and power to head unit are fine like this and can listen to music , as soon as i turn the engine on , the power cuts slightly , but comes back , the head unit is still lit, but no sound from speakers.....

have checked all the fuses and one of the ignition fuses is blown , seems unlikely to be related ? is it ? one guy i know thought it could be the speaker loom , but how can it if the stereo works fine ? someone else thought the wiring ? but how is that possible when it works just fine before turn over ?

A bit lost , I don't have the money to take it to a specialist , the car was cheap but insurance cleaned me out.

Would be eternally grateful if anyone can help

M.

Not meaning to be sarky or anything

you have wheels. Is it vital that you have music?

As a student and fist car owner I endured 7 many hour journeys in an aged Triumph Herald with no radio. With hindsight as an inexperienced driver at the time it allowed me to pay more attention to the road withoout distraction.

btw try replacing the fuze

Oh, you old cumurdgeon Cymrogwyllt! In my day we rebored our engines after 40,000 miles, and every owner knew how to clean the points with a handy piece of sandpaper. We made head gaskets out of cereal packets. Youth of day, don't know they're born!

I think the OP has answered his own question. Has the fuse been replaced? The accessories wiring route runs through a different path when the ignition is in the 1 and 2 position (that's why some accessories are only available with the ignition 'on')

Rovers have a speed sensor wire from the speedo, whcih appears to be a feed untill a load is required ! are you sure the radio is wired correctly. It was a common fault with many Rovers when people started changing radio's !

Is this a regular head unit ,or are you using it with a high power amp? What make stereo is it.?You seem to have wired it correctly.Even if the permanent and auxilliary powers were reversed the unit would still work but the station memory would be lost.Purple is the perm supply.green is aux power and black will be the earth.hth

its just a regular pioneer head unit , not too cheap not to expensive , the other thing is that I have connected the cables for remote control but the buttons for the cd player on the steering wheel do jack , they dont even work when the the stereo does.

Nope no amp, thought I would just get the basics working first, as i said, its getting power fine with both the engine on and off , just no sound from the speakers when engine is on , when its off all is fine and dandy .....

I have yet to change the fuse , Only discovered that today , not even sure what type of fuse or where to get it from, got a Haynes on the way.

I'd like some music in the car , now i have dropped some cash on a stereo would be nice for it to do more than only work with the engine off ;o)

Thanks for the replies fellas, I'll try getting the fuse seen to (?)

If that fails I guess it'll have to wait til I have enough cash to take it to an expert :o(

Most odd.If it works with engine off ,then it should go with engine on.I can,t see the fuse blown being an issue if both powers are present at the radio.Try it with the steering controls disconnected.hth

Have tried it with disconnecting the remote cable , did nothing different, its a complete mystery . i'd be happier if it just outright did not work.

managed to find a 200 series haynes online, says owners are not to attempt to change the particular fuses of which the one that has blown is......

Cheers
