Ford Focus 56 1.8TDCi - Black Exhaust Smoke/Cold Start - arnold2

Hi,

Trying to track down the source of black smoke from my Focus. It only occurs when starting from cold overnight (so OK if left during the daytime). What happens is black smoke on startup, and in addition the startup itself has become a bit 'rough'. After a minute or less depending on temp, the engine idles normally, and this morning in the cold just a tiny trace of normal white exhaust due to the cold.

Any ideas - EGR valve? I have poured in some Forte diesel cleaner so hoping that will help!

Sorry to thread hijack but I have the exact same car with the same problem so far I have changed the glow Plugs to no avail. Misfire when starting for around 45 seconds then it all goes away and problem will not occur until car left overnight. It always fires up immediately when starting but I was wondering if there could be an air leak on one of the fuel pipe unions causing it?
Does your car take ages to register on the temp gauge?
