Peugeot 205 leaking - studebaker
My 1990 205 suffers from severe condensation at the moment. I think there may be a leak around the glass in the tailgate. Is it a practical DIY task to take the window out and replace with a new seal? Or is there a good mastic/sealer available?

I think you'll find that the 205 tailgate window is bonded, and will need the services of Autoglass or some other specialist. That said, it seems more likely that the leak is elsewhere, such as round the latch or the wiper spindle (if you have one) or the studs attaching the plastic trim - possibly even the pipe to the washer.

Water getting into the tailgate usually escapes from drain holes near the bottom corners, ending up in the soundproofing under the boot mat. Rather than finding the leak point, I covered these drain holes with small bits of heavy polythene and Lassotape so that the water could escape past the weather-seal onto the bumper. Not perfect, but a big improvement.

You need to be sure the problem is with the tailgate window. Place plenty of tissues and paper towels in strategic places to prove where the water is getting in (worked better for me than sitting in the boot with a hosepipe spraying).

I was convinced my 309 was leaking round the rear window seal because it looked such a poor fit. But the fault was eventually traced to a rear light cluster seal. Fixed with bathroom sealant.

And my 306 also leaked through a rear light cluster - but that was my fault because I hadn't tighted up the securing nuts fully after replacing a light bulb.

Many thanks Andrew. I'll check out the leak a bit further. I don't have a wiper but there are blanking grommets to fill the holes. Thanks again.

Studebaker - I should have added that in severe cases of boot leaks, enough water may collect in the channels under the boot mat to run forwards into the well under the rear seats. Usually water there suggests a leak round (or through) the rear door. It is also quite possible for persistent condensation to result from water under the carpet. If you aren't very sure where the leak is, find the puddle first!

Pull off the weatherstrip on the front door opening, then a couple of the carpet clips, and feel underneath the carpet in the footwell. If there is water there, it is a bit tedious (but fairly easy) to remove seats, belts, handbrake bezel and other bits of loose trim, extract the carpet and throw out the water with the saturated underfelt. Fit new felt and the problem should go away if the water only got in by an open window. If there really is a hole somewhere, back to the drawing-board.

I'm interested in buying this Pugeot 205 XS 1.4 1991 J Reg, but was concerned if there was a water leak in it. I looked in the boot and the wading stuff in right-hand side corner near the rear seats was a b it wet and there was a bit dampness under the mat of the left-hand side seat and a bit under some of the others. There is a bit condensation, but not a lot, mainly due to the cold wheather, and it looks as if it clears when the sun is out. The condensation is expected. It is nothing compared to the leak my 1990 Ford Fiesta, hence why i'm looking for a new car. The Pugeot has been rarely used as the guy selling is still learning to drive. The car is up for £795, but he will take £600 and i think i'm happy to pay this if it is worth it. But i'm not sure whether it is worth buying this car cos this could be a water leak. I like the car, but a bit concerned. Does anyone have any advice for me please? Thanks.

Finding where the water is getting in can be tedious. But once you've found the leak, it's rarely a difficult job to fix it.

Provided the leaks haven't caused rust, I would say go ahead.

I've just noticed that you've asked the same question in a new thread "Peugeot 205 - Is It Leaking", so there's no need for us to add more comments to this thread.
