another problem with my 406, recently the whistle when the turbo kicks in has got louder. i'm worried that another costly repair bill is round the corner.

anyone have any knowledge of this because i really need to plan in advance how long till something go's!!!!!

Just turn the radio up :-)

Seriously, is it due for an oil change? I've had a number of Saab turbos that always whistled. However, a recent change/increase in note could be worrying but not necessarily terminal. Could also be an air leak on the pressurised side of the induction system (i.e. between turbo and inlet manifold).

I had an exhaust front pipe touching the subframe after being disturbed. The turbo whistle then rose to banshee level.

Moved pipe.......cured.

just had a new exhaust fitted and its due an oil change!

don't think i'll worry too much then, as it makes it sound more powerful anyway.................even theough its so not!!!!

If you think your 406 has loud turbo-whistle think yourself lucky!

I was fortunate enough (??) to have a longish trip in a new Volve Fire Engine a couple of days ago with a mate (Driver Familiarisation) and that thing sounded like it was going to take off when you plant your foot! It could alomost get too much after 15 mins I guess.

This can be due to the turbine spindle being out of balance.

If it just occurred though, I suppose it's unlikely.

I think that from the cars you hear on the road, some turbochargers are noisier than others in the whistle department.

I don't think you can plan that it's going to go wrong. Although Diesel car magazine has plenty of advertisers that are specialists with turbos if you want to get it checked.

The turbo on my HDI 406 seems to whistle more when the engine is cold, but goes quiet as the engine warms up. When the weather is cold as well, the whistle is more noticeable. Even when the engine is hot, in cold weather the turbo whistles when pulling hard up a hill. The car's done 72K and it's been like that for the 12K that I've had it.

My Peugeot 306 D Turbo also whistles loud when cold. I have some (cheaper BP) mineral oil in at the moment as it desperately needed an oil change. Does anyone recommend changing to a semi-syth for Diesels? As I plan to change again to a higher quality oil soon. Does anyone recommend a good brand for Diesels?

dont worry about it ,it is often caused by the high speed air at the impeller tips superchargers and gas turbines using centifrugal compressors all sound the same

Emerson,

Re your question on oils, I've used Millers XFE semi-synth oil (£13ish for 5 litres) for the past 10 years; however, I disregard the 'extended life' blurb on the can and still carry out oil changes every 6K or so. I believe it was one of the first diesel-specific oils to be widely available. One word of caution though, when I used it on my daughter's K reg Clio diesel, it caused oil leaks. Changing back to Millers XFD, a straight mineral oil stopped the leaks. Hope this helps.

re Oil leaks using semi-synth. That's very interesting, I'd never considered that the type of oil I was using might be causing a problem! My P-reg Peugeot 405 TD estate (loads and loads and loads of miles) seems to be weeping oil from about 4 different places on the engine, and I always run my old diesel ex-cabs on Castrol GTD Magnatec (fully synth). It doesn't actually seem to be losing a great quantity, probably goes down to 2/3 on the dipstick over 6,000 miles, but it makes a helluva mess on the drive! They never seem to break down though.
I'm not fixing it anyway, it's going in part-ex at the weekend for a petrol Mondeo...
