My car has covered 33K and BMW confirm that the gearbox is sealed for life and that they do not recommend any service to them.

To me as an ex engineer this sounds incredible, my investigations reveal that the oil deteriorates with time and/or constant use and that oil and filter on auto boxes should be changed at circa 35K, have BMW found the holy grail or do they just ignore the auto servicing.

Any experience out there will help.

Thanks,

P J Taylor

It may be "sealed for life" but BMW autos are not guaranteed for life.

Son's former next door neighbour's cost nigh on £4K to fix auto box at 70K.

A proper auto shop may give you better guidance than BMW or their agents as they have vested interests in keeping costs down for fleet buyers. Although 33K seems a bit low to worry!

falkirk Bairn sums it up nicley, contact an auto trans specialist, he will guide you as they take the things apart all day so they know whats best. sealed for life is just a carrot for the fleet market and they don't normally care what happens beyond 60-70K.

33k seems a little low unless you tow.

If you look on one of the BMW forums there is a method described for changing the oil a bit complex whether it. worth it I wouldn't know.I have a 5 series auto myself and often wonder what is best.
