Civic Cambelt change - P.Mason {P}
I intend to get the cambelt on my 1998 Civic Aerodeck changed at 50K,(10K sooner than recommended, for safety)and wonder if I should have the tensioner changed at the same time. Is it a plastic or a metal one? Any advice gratefully received.
Regards,
P.

P,
I know nothing of the Civic "internals" but, with the legendary Honda build quality I would be extremely surprised if their designers compromised the engines quality with such a well known weak point. Perhaps one of the expert contributors could advise you.

Well done on your caution. From memory the tensioner is an all steel affair and rarely gives trouble but check it as usual for any 'dryness' when you can hear the balls running in the race because the lubricant has eked out and for any roughness as it is rotated. Any doubt, replace it. Same goes for the guide roller. Remember if your Civic is fitted with a balance shaft & belt, same thing applies!

Thanks for the advice, Andrew. I'll get the mechanic to check the points that you mentioned.
