War of words with prank caller - hillman

Re. the article in the HJ colum,n in the Telecgraph date 23 August answering a reader who stood up to aprank callerwanting to work a fiddle about a non-existing accident.

If a prank caller does this can one ring 1471 when they ring off and get their telephone number ? I don't know what to do in that case, but a call to the police might help.

You can ring 1471, but you may not get a number, or at least a valid number.

The occiasional cold calls we get to our landline either have no number to trace ("we do not have the callers number to return the call", says the BT voice), or, the 'number' is 000000.

If before making a call you dial 141 your number is not available to anyone dialing 1471 although the police will be able to trace you.

If the "pranksters" are doing this as a serious project for a while, they might be buying a cheap pay-as-you-go mobile to make a few calls on; and then just throw the thing away and get another with a different number
