Peugeot 406 - Multi functional digital display - hairybob

Hello I have a 97 406 LX 1.8 16v, which apparently did not come with a Multi functional digital display as standard. The wiring loom is there, and I have managed to get a display with the same 15pin connector.The handbook seems to indicate that the display is controlled by the end of the wash/wipe stalk but the bit you push in seems seized up. Is it possible to get this working. I have it plugged in, and it lights up with 4 ---- symbols on the display so there is power there.
