Cost of servicing - diesel v petrol - 3point14

Reading here and elsewhere some people comment that diesels cost more to service than petrol engined cars. I have not found that to be true overseas but as I'm in the market for a new small Fiesta type car now, I want to hear what you think.

So what is the reality ? Do diesels really cost more to service and if so, how much more ?

Oh come on.

4 £1.50 spark plugs vs VAG oil at £40 per 5 litres?

DMF replacements every 60,000 miles.

DPF filter cleanout every 30,000 miles, and/or replacement every 70,000.

It should be as madf says - but it can vary from make to make. A good question to ask when making enquiries from dealers.

The only direct source of information I have is my father who has for decades avoided Renault and VW because of markedly higher service costs in the past, irrespective of whether diesel or petrol.

Now he loves his little Corsas but I don't. Mind you, he still thinks diesels are for tractors !
