twice this has happened to me on my way to work and made me late in the last couple of months when i stop for a few minutes at the petrol station for my paper or petrol i get back in the car everything does as it is supposed to do but the engine simply will not turn over no sounds or nothing it is a zafira A 1.6 petrol manual 2000 any clues will be helpful thanks. forgot to say after about 30 minutes it will start with no problems and run as normal.

Most likely either the starter motor or electrics associated with it. If you can see the motor, next time it doesn't work connect a length of wire between the battery + and the small terminal on the starter solonoid, make sure its not in gear! Touch the terminal, if the starter now turns the fault is in the electrics, if it does the motor is faulty - assuming all the connections to the starter are OK - thick lead from battery and earth lead from battery to engine

I have had this on my 2002 astra 1.4, basically the same engine. Mine was the starter motor, changed it myslef not problens. A bit awarkwark if you have not got ramps or a good jack a its at the back of the engine.

very fustrating it is in deed. Mine used to do it after i had run for about 25 -30mins and it had warmed up quite a bit. If you get it changed i think you will find its fine afterwards. Whta is your mileage. My starter lasted 83000 mile from new,

dropped it at garage this morning then went to work simply changed starter motor only cost £50 couldnt be bothered to dig all the tools out as halfway through moving house dont even know which house they are in, only happened twice about 92500 miles

hi there woz it the starter motor ??? ive got a zafira on a 51 plate 1.6 club last week tryed to turn the car over all the lights came on just wouldnt turn over so i tryed movein the wire's to the starter then tryed again an it started up so the next day i took the three wires off an cleaned them week later it done it again so moveed the wires again tryed starting it an it never worked few min later an it started can any 1 help plz

it was the starter motor just changed it over for a new one and not had a problem since you can pick one up for about £55

Guys, can anyone help me my zafira has good battery power and fuses as checked by the AA but nothing happens when i turn the key, all electrical items appear to work, but the starter motor won't turn whatsoever, but also the car wont jump start, so i'm assuming that rules out a starter motor fault? Any ideas??

Engine siezed springs to mind ,will the engine turn over when its towed in gear thats the worse case scenario .

Got the same problem right now with an Astra G 1.7 dti, 80000 miles.

Starter motor only works when given a light tap or two with a hammer.

Stuck solenoid which will get un-stuck when it gets warmer. I shall fix it myself, only needs a bit of lube in the right place, no need for a new one.

Till then she's learnt the procedure and keeps a hammer under the seat.

Problem sorted, it was a corroded wire within the immobiliser sytem, so the wire was replaced. reconnected and a software update run to clear all faults and restore system. The garage were great spent about five hours trying to source the problem, and couldn't so brought in a mobile auto electric specialist, but garage only charged for one hours labour of £45 and the specialist was £135, which i thought was reasonable.
