Peugeot J5 2.5 diesel - Lucas CAV injection pump timing advice - jamesa

Could anybody explain in English how to check the timing of a Lucas CAV injection pump on a 2.5 U25/661 [CRD93 ] 1991 diesel engine.

I have read a couple of manuals but just do not understand them.

I have removed the pump recently for overhaul, I have refitted it to dot marks I made but now just want to check the timing.

Unless anything was done to alter the internal timing when the pump was overhauled it should be OK set to the original marks. If it starts and runs OK I wouldn't worry. If it is retarded it will be difficult to start and quieter than usual, over advanced it will knock a lot. Adjust it until it sounds right, that's what I've been doing for years.

I'd second that reckoning. Have done the same myself on similar era Citroen and Renault diesel cars.
