There does not seem to be a pattern in my street, other than Kia seem popular with the retired folk and those funding their own cars, (me next), the company cars are a variety of makes. There may be an effect caused by which dealers are available in the local area. I find it odd that people refer to cars as "Japanese" or any other nationality, they are rarely made in the country mentioned and are often owned by the major international companies.

Actually I agree with that, even though it was me who made the original comment. That Civic on my road probably consists entirely of "British" bits, but - being old - I still subconsciously think of Honda as Japanese even though all cars come from all over the place.
If it was a Datsun it would be Japanese.........

Among my neighbours, it's generally been Peugeots. At the moment, though, there are about as many Fords as Peugeots.
|
Yes the civics and jazz are made here but the new Accord is only made in Japan AFAIK.
I know what you mean but you won't get people to call them English cars ,not yet
anyway

Don't worry AS, I was just being difficult. :-) I once owned a very Japanese Datsun!
Its just that these days I think many people don't realise that the badge on a car is just a brand, and may be linked to an apparently unrelated company. Obviously not the car savvy backroomers though!

Just had a look out the window in our cul-de-sac. Most of the cars are out atm but what is there and what I know about is as follows.

2 Passats
Fiat Doblo
Range Rover ( mid 90's )
Hyundai Elantra ( when did you last see one of them! )
old Corsa

In my immediate vicinity

3 Polos
1 Ford Galaxy shaped thing
3 Corsa
1 Mk1 Focus
1 C5
2 Picasso

|
The owner of the MX5 (staying here) on her "close" were a disproportionate numbers of black cars - she's a bit up market mostly newish Audis, BMW, Mercs and Land Rover Products 60% were black - (I know I worked it out when out walking the dog)
|
Bit of a mixed bag - BMW (1 E46 Convertible), MG (1 MGF), Vauxhall (1 Tigra, 2 Astra), Ford (2 Focus, 1 Escort), Volvo (1 S40), Nissan (1 Navara), Rover (1 45) Renault (1 Megane).
|
|
One house a few doors down from me must be a glutton for punishment - 3 petrol Freelanders and a derv Defender from late 90's to mid 00's . While I cannot say we live city centre - we are a long way from anywhere remotely rural - goodness only knows the logic behind their choice , still, it must suit them as it's been this way for a few years now .

1 Fiat Punto (old model)
1 Peugeot 206
1 Toyota Yaris

No real pattern
...apart from they're almost all up-market, or new, or both!
|
Next door and ourselves all Citroen diesel. Very rural so not really any other folks to consider.
However an *interesting* house a couple of miles away has a whole cul-de-sac's worth to themselves. Truly it is...
3x Discovery TD5, 1x Imprezna, 2 Transits, 2 scruffy Corsas, Transit pickup. All used at least once a week. A vehicle for *any event* I'd say.

My only immediate neighbour has, wait for it...........no car at all. Double garage, two parking spaces, no car.
Opposite me, a Mark II Clio. Again double garage, two parking places. Elderly lady only ever takes it out to go to church on Sunday mornings. I expect she's had it from new and it has 846.4 miles on the clock. Game old lady, I think she can only see the road through the steering wheel.
Then, a bit further along, a Toyota Avensis, then a Lexus Coupe hard top/cabrio thing, then a Smart Roadster (strangely exactly the same as ours in every way), then opposite them a Mazda transit-type van and a Mercedes C Class. Then a 5-Series Beemer.
The Close then takes a bend and a dip to the left, and I rarely go down there so I don't know what lurks beyond, although obvious regular residents who come past me in the mornings are a Mk III Prius, Citroen C-Crosser, Merc A Class (Mk I).
The A Class is an onteresting one. The house where it lives is themed in exactly the same colour as the car. Doors, Garage door, ornaments in windows, plant pots in the garden, the lot. It's a kind of dark electric blue and either they love the car so much that they decorated their house in the same colour, or they only bought the car to match the house. Weirdos, I reckon.
The house immediately behind me has a Merc C Class and a Merc SLK.
Quite an eclectic bunch. Although quite a few Mercedes victims. Street is mostly occupied by retired people whose families have upped and left. Only us and 5-series Beemer man have young families.

In lots of places local dealerships must influence many patterns. Where we used to live half the close had Fiats, because there was a very well established, local family garage that had the Fiat dealership.
Where we live now there are no garages in either of the two closest towns. The third closest has a Ford dealership which has been a family business since the 1920s. You see Fords with their logo on all over the area despite the demographic being one where you wouldn't expect to see many Fords!

Interesting observation as the next village has a Subaru dealership(no Subaru's in my road) and the nearest town has just a Peugeot dealership( none of them either in my road).
As its a fairly affluent area,I suppose its going to have more expensive cars on the driveways, although no Audi's and only one beemer. I did admire my neighbours Discovery in the recent bad weather, driving up the hill like a scalded cat.I shall report back on its reliability.
