98 1.6 coolant hoses - freman
I am still on the original set of coolant hoses & although they appear to be in good condition I think it is about time they were changed.
As some of them are in an awkward possition for access I would like a few tips on the easiest way to go about it.
Does removing the radiator with attached hoses help ?

I wouldn't bother if I were you, they are not like they were in the '50s when they perished and fell to bits, if not damaged they could well last the life of the car - if that doesn't put you off the price probably will!

Thank you Peter N & Big Tee, it is music to my ears to know that the could last the the life of the car even though it is now 12 years old.
I bought this car second hand & as it had no history I did not know if the anti-freeze was the original Ford eternal nectar so I changed it to be on the safe side.
With that & subsequent changes I have had no problems with the heater also as far as burst hoses go my wife had one burst on a 1988 Fiat Uno so itn did happpen after the fifties.
Thanks to you both again

I have three Citroen XMs all about 15 years old and I believe all with original hoses, and there are miles of them!

Thank you Peter N for your latest info, your XM hoses sound very interesting perhaps you could take me on a guided tour of them one day.

I don't know where they all go myself! I thought I would add that one of the cars has done 250,000 miles.

I had a 91 Escort 1.3 ,bought new ,and traded it in in late 2006, the hoses were fine. It needed very little in the way of mechanical repair- a new clutch at 100K, but my three offspring did use it to get driving experience.
I would leave them alone and check them periodically, I did change the 'fan belt', but that is cheap and easy to do.

Thank you Turbo D for your personal experience, I am taking the advice of those who offered it.
I have changed the auxiliary belt twice when I changed the cambelt at 5 yearly intervals although I had only done 50% of the mileage.
I think its best not to go looking for trouble as I now only use the car for local journeys in fact nearing 79 & 61 years driving thats all I feel like doing.
Thanks again for your trouble.
