I remember hearing, somewhere, about vw recalling some of their 1998 passats due to a problem with the steering rack, but I can't remember the details. Please can anyone help, or point me in the right direction?.

The info is in the Car-by-Car Breakdown under recalls, have a look but here is what you're after pasted from that page.
...."March '98-August '98-built Passats recalled because steering track rod ends could work loose."......

If I'm about to look at an unfamiliar car I make for that section to look at the previous recall requirements.
