01 2.0 electrical problem - richbev

the horn on this 51 reg 307 has an intermitant problem. sometimes it works and some times it doesnt. when the car is stationary we turned the steering wheel from left to right and kept on pressing the horn. this made the horn work in some positions and not in others. do we need the steering wheel off. will this be a broken wire behind the wheel. what happens with the air bag if we do remove the steering wheel??? many thanks rich

hi there, this problem sound to me like it is the comms 200 unit, this is the unit behind the steering wheel which has the indicator, wiper and radio stalks, i would be 99% sure that this will be your problem, regards

Erratic operation of the horn on these is often caused by a poor contact where the earth wire onto the steering wheel becomes loose.You will need to remove the airbag to fix the problem.Once removed you will see a spring loaded connector pushed into a square hole in the steering wheel base.Clean/tighten up or better still drill a small hole in the steering wheel and secure the wire with a ring terminal and small self-tapping screw.hth
