Hi
My first post on here and am hoping for a few pointers - is replacing the loom a fairly straight forward job? Do I need any specialist tools - also should I apply gasket compound when I put the "rocker" cover back on?
Just as some background I have been experiencing some juddering between 2000-3000 revs in my GT TDI 150 PD, engine code ARL, after about 10 miles driving (similar symptoms to this thread www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=67399&...e). It clears if I turn the engine off and on - and also on longer journeys seems to settle down after a while.
My local garage diagnosed a misfire on cylinder 1 and said it needed a new injector. I was thinking of trying the injector loom first as it's cheaper to do - although someone I was speaking to seemed to think that as the injectors are driven off the cam the wiring couldn't have this effect???
Any advice or suggestions much appreciated - thanks.

Replacing the injector loom is a DIY job.
An intermittent loom will cause a misfire and should leave a fault code (VAGCOM will reveal) - the injectors themselves are virtually trouble free if the fuel filter has been changed as needed.
Warm the new loom carrier before you put it in. Disconnecting the multiway plug on the cylinder head often sets a fault code which will need to be cleared.
This is becoming an increasingly common problem as these engines age - better quality wiring and connectors would have helped, but putting wiring inside engines is not very clever.
Be very careful with the rocker cover (it really is one!) as the gasket is not available separately. If you take it off without molesting the joint face, make sure everything is clean and re-torque the bolts in order, to specification it probably won't leak.

The fuel pressure in the injectors is generated by the camshaft, but the actual injection control is done electronically (hence the wiring). These are "pump injectors" which have high pressure pump and fuel injection functionality in one unit.
Can't add anything to 659's excellent post.

Thanks very much for the info both of you. Now I just need to decide whether to have a go myself this weekend (i'll need to buy a torque wrench that goes down low enough - 10 nm I think?) or to get the garage to do it next week. The thought of oil gushing out everywhere from the rocker cover is a bit off-putting!
Thanks again

Just to update this - I got the loom replaced at a local garage which has sorted the problem. Think they stuffed me on a bit on labour but at least it's fixed - thanks for the advice chaps.

Hi, hoping you could help me, I have a golf 150pd 02 reg, I am having a similar problem and just wanted you to confirm whetheror not u had the same symptoms as my issue. the car seems to hit a wall when it reaches 3000rpm and won't accelerate past this point, it judders and throws out black smoke and hits a crawling pace for a few seconds??? Did you experience any of this or do you know what it could
possibly be??
Any advice is much appreciated

Are you sure this isn't just a MAF problem ?
|
Hi, recently had same problem on 52 golf IV 1.9 tdi 100, independent garage couldn't find fault code but checked MAF and was OK. VW dealer found fault with wiring loom to one of the injectors. Quoting 282 to fix which seems a bit steep, not sure how much is labour vs parts, awaiting a call back. Tempted to buy parts and get fitted elsewhere for less...

1.9 tdi 100 is not a PD engine. You had better post up you engine code. If it's an AVG it does not have cable harness in the head. Regards Peter
