01 3.0 Possible auto box fault - Big Bad Dave
There's something wrong and I think it's probably the gearbox or t.c. Under load it's ok, but when I'm cruising or driving at a constant speed there's a slight judder\hiccup. Just as I come to a stop it judders or slams as it disengages from drive. A bit like a manual car that's stalling when you don't press the clutch.

I've had transmission fluid changed and it's made no difference.

It feels a bit like a misfire but had a diagnostic done on the engine which came out fine apart from an occasional oxygen sensor fault - whatever that is. It's sweet as a nut when I rev it, could it be that it's only in drive that it's misfiring? Deep down I suspect gearbox which could be terminal for this car, given age and value.

It's less pronounced when the engine and gearbox is cold.

It's a puzzler. Any thoughts?

Many thanks

Dave

Presumably the transmission has an electronic lock up on the Torque converter....perhaps this is dodgy e.g. wiring, relay, or it's failing.

Some cars used to allow for a little more torque converter slip when they were cold as a strategy for faster warm up and better driveability (Audi)...perhaps this strategy is still used and so mitigates the effect when cold.

Sort out your oxygen sensor code fault first.

The fault could be something as simple as some air leaking into the inlet manifold, through a leaking vacuum pipe connection or an inlet manifold gasket, etc, etc. The unmetered air would then upset the oxygen sensor - this sort of fault would give odd running under cruise conditions when warm - the oxygen sensor does nothing when cold, or under full load enrichment.

Don't just go out and have a new oxygen sensor fitted - the sensor itself may be OK, and may simply be reporting correctly that there's a fuelling or air fault elsewhere which needs fixing.

To sort this, you need to find a mechanic who can think as well as read fault codes - at a guess, that will be an easier quest in Poland than it is in the UK.

nice answer NC
i like your style
and a good answer to the problem in laymans terms (probably)

Yeah thanks NC and others, that has helped me understand a lot more and given me hope. I guess you're talking about that huge drainpipe-like tube that has a filter at one end and goes into the top of the engine?

I'm just wondering why that engine light wouldn't have come on if it had detected this kind of fault?

Thanks again.

A very generous and helpful neighbour and garage owner took the car for a few days and gave it a thorough going-over. They can't find anything amiss in the engine at all, the oxygen sensor is fine and he thinks it's a gearbox fault.

There's an autobox specialist down the road from me.

I thought I'd post a link to their website which is also in English because I thought it was very impressive. I'd be interested to know how their prices compare to the UK. If you click on their "offer", they say they can remove, replace, repair a gearbox from a 2WD car for 600 zlots, about £135. I suppose that depends what's required of course but it sounds like a reasonable starting point and they say they have a large quantity of s/h recovered gearboxes and converters so they may even be able to simply strip another one in.

They sound like they care, free towing, free diagnostics, free oil change...

It's an AL4 box, not a very good one, famous for its problems with electro-valves and dodgy electronics.

Do a google search on "autotransmisja" - they are the best in the country, even Auto-Swiat uses them as a think-tank when a reader asks for advice etc. Personally I wouldn't even bother with that Jozefow garage, really...

If "autotransmisja" can't help, then no one will. They're located near the IKEA / Janki, I guess...

Dave,

you might want to have a read of this thread on frenchcarforum (you'll have to register):

where CitroJim removed and rebuilt the transmisson on his V6 Auto Xantia. It looks like the box is not inherently weak, but has a weak point (the spring in the valve block) which goes on to cause terminal failure inside the box. Your local auto trans specialist will probably be able to remove the valve block in situ to have a look at that spring.

Otherwise, just keep driving it till total loss of drive, and consign it to the scrapheap. Note that fitting another box requires access to a dealer diag computer to reset the ECU so it recognises the new box.
