We're looking for a secondhand Punto as a second car. So I've been searching the Freeads, Autotrader and ebay. It's surprising how difficult it is to find a car with the right spec of the right age at a sensible (read cheap!) price and reasonably close, say 50 miles, to home (South Coast).

On ebay, it seems to me that most of the eligible cars are, relatively speaking, 'up north', by which I mean, north of Birmingham. Have other ebayers noticed the same? Is it that Northerners are more in tune with selling cars this way?
Buying on ebay - OldSock
Yeah, it's grim up there, innit?
Buying on ebay - bell boy
yes its grim down south
cars are dearer down south they always were
bloke used to come to my auction from the effluent south coast every week to fill his boots up with our quality looked after northern cars

Buying on ebay - Chris M
I'd love to get my hands on one of your quality northern cars. I found a likely candidate in Crewe so, prompted by the 'contact us if you have any questions' statement in the ebay listing, emailed a list of about six questions. The response came back that there were too many questions to answer and I should come and view the car. I don't mind travelling to collect a car, but a wasted journey to just view........
Perhaps Crewonians have not heard of Hampshire?

Surely if you list a car on ebay you should expect interest from further away than the end of t'street?

I live within 50 miles of Crewe.
I've heard of Hampshire.

Horrible place:-)

Ahem! Steady! When you are talking about Hampshire, you are talking about God's Own County.
Buying on ebay - Chris M
But why are God's Own People and their near neighbours, less likely to use ebay?
Buying on ebay - Alanovich
Because we're wealthier and less tight (speaking as a near neighbour).

Allegedly.

I've used eBay for about 5 years now and have a 100% feedback rating for 97 transactions.
I've never purchased a carthere though - I don't like the idea that they are mostly classified ads and hence exempt from feedback scores, which after all - is what eBay is all about!
Personally speaking I would travel to the far ends of this sceptred isle, for 'the right car'
Buying on ebay - Dave_TD
I've bought and sold my last 3 cars via eBay. I'm very much at the budget end of the market so if I find one that's any good (read: it works, and doesn't continually cost megabucks to keep working) then I hang on to it.

Current bus is a '97 Escort bought from a chap 120 miles away, we agreed a halfway point to meet and the transaction was clear, fair and honest. I've had the car for 16 months now, done 17,000 miles in it and (major breakdowns notwithstanding) will keep it until at least its MoT next April.

perro - You're just showing off about your 100% rating. Me, I wouldn't brag about my 100% rating (oops).

What surprised me a little was that my wife's ebay account has a feedback score of 100% and >5,000, so I would have thought the seller would have taken my interest seriously.

I don't like the idea with eBay that sellers usually say the car is up for sale elsewhere, so you could invest a lot of time and effort in looking at the car, then bidding, only for it to be withdrawn.

I live about five miles away and to be honest I avoid Crewe town centre if at all possible, it's not regarded as the chav capital for nothing...................

There are 3 local puntos on ebay, 2 trade one private (blue diesel), the best part about Crewe is that most trains pass through it so easy access from all over the country and probably the fastest way out!

I bught a 6 year old polo on EBAY from a trader, he has a forecourt presence in Herts, and O therefore thought the car would be half decent.

I paid £1750 for a car with no faults described, and MOT'd. How it passed I do not know cos within a few weeks I found the following

fan belt worn to close to fail
Cambelt worn to close to fail
2 tyres barely legal
oil leak in gearbox
Car cuts out occassionally immediately after starting and engine management warning light is now on

Item number if anyone wants to see it (it is a completed item of course) 310140306801

The "book" price is around £2150, and I have spent more than that total (purchase price plus remedial work) on it already, and still not finished getting it roadworthy.

Be careful is all I can say

None of this would cause an MOT failure guy - it looks like a nice little jamjar to me - its done a few miles though, I wouldn't have touched it cos of his poor feedback rating.

Apart from the tyres which being barely legal actually are legal all the above are not part of the MOT test...............................................

I'm only looking at cars with good descriptions/feedback.

So many of the listings have comments like "Airbag light is on but my mechanic says this isn't a problem" - Like hell it isn't!

Or the cars are Cat C or D but the repair is excellent. Fine if you're in the market for such a car, but the sellers rarely seem to appreciate the price should reflect the fact.

I've never bought or sold a car on ebay before so my plan was to ask all relevant questions beforehand, preferably by email. If all OK, then a quick check on collecting the car to verify. If porkies are apparent, I'll walk and never mind the negative feedback.

I do wonder whether the seller in Crewe couldn't provide honest answers (in writing) to my questions so therefore made an excuse not to.

When I first started using ebay I got caught a few times, everytime the dicription was poor so now I avoid such listings., poor photos = avoid

The private car on there does have a contact number though.........................

If you feel like that, then why haven't you left negative feedback?

Who's that remark to? You can only leave feedback if you've bought the item...........

There is nothing in this world wrong with buying cars on eBay. It is no different from buying them on Autotrader. Nor indeed the cards on the wall in Safeways.

Why should there be? (The only difference is that some traders are putting out cars 10-20 a week, on no reserve auctions.)
Buying on ebay - pd
I've just looked at the listing and there is no mention of any history so logically you'd assume the cambelt hasn't been done. If a seller has evidence it has been they usually state it as it helps sell the car.

There is also nothing about the tyres and if theyr'e legal they'll pass the MOT.

That said, you paid about trade, so you could probably have bought the same car from a regular car auction where it would have cost you £1800 plus £200 buyers premium plus it would have had all the same faults so it wasn't that bad a buy if it is reasonable condition otherwise.
Buying on ebay - TheOilBurner
I've never bought a car from eBay, but did sell one recently. I listed the car very honestly, even mentioned small scratches on the paintwork. Lots of photos were given, including of mismatched paintwork from an earlier repair.

My car was snapped up within a couple of days for quite a bit more than Parker's guide Private Good price, which we all know tends to be optimistic.

Buyer turned up with cash, took the car with no quibbles, even complimenting me on the condition and everyone was happy.

Worked for me.

- - - Chris, you seem to have your head screwed on ok, unlike most of us when we bought our 1st car!
If you could find a private seller on eBay - like TheOilBurner, and with excellent feedback - then that would be the 'way to go'.
Buying on ebay - TheOilBurner
Yep agreed, asking lots of questions is good too. Anybody selling a car on eBay must be prepared to answer dozens of questions, if they don't want to, then you've got your warning light right there!

I often make questions up to ask sellers on eBay (even if I already know the answer), just to see what kind of answers I get back. The replies can be even more insightful than the sellers feedback sometimes! ;)

I suppose that's the same kind of strategy you might employ on Autotrader when you phone the seller. Anyone enthusiastic, open and straightforward to talk to usually indicates a car worth viewing, the rest get consigned to the bin...

"when I see a bird that walks like a duck and swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, I call that bird a duck."

Two of my recent cars have come from ebay - in each case both cars were listed clearly and honestly; I asked a few questions and got straightforward answers from the sellers which answered both my questions and concerns.

One was a local private sale, the other was from a dealer in Slough, who had a really good attitude towards buyers - answered questions, gave a phone number, and even made me a cuppa when I arrived to collect the car, which had been valeted. Very good service for an old Espace which sold for not much over £500. The car was honestly described and has been superb apart from the odd electrical hiccup. Talking to the guy at the dealer when I collected it turned out they sell quite a few of their part exchanges through ebay - they can go for good money, but they do get their fair share of time wasters.
