00 1.6 Changing auto trans fluid - Andrew Moorey (Tune-Up)
How do you drain and refill the auto box on this crittur? Doesnt appear to be an obvious drain point. The service schedule doesnt list a filter replacement at any time but this is a very neglected motor and at 114,000 miles I'd like to be on the safe side.

Spoke to the good folk at King Automatics in Epsom. On the bottom of the box is a strange looking nut (27mm) with a 19mm bolt head in the middle. This is a combined filler/level plug. Remove the 19mm bolt then remove the 27mm nut. As this comes out it has a tube attached which acts like an overflow in the sink when you refill it. As the correct level is reached the oil spills down the tube out of the 19mm hole.
Refill procedure is to add oil (Dexron 111 or Texaco 7045)through the filler plug hole in the top of the'box until it spills out then start engine. Continue adding oil until it begins to spill again then replace 19mm bolt. Add a further 1/2 litre an you are done. There is no filter to change. Surprisingly even though the car had missed oil changes at 32, 64 and 96,000 miles the oil was still clear red in colour and only the tiniest bit smelly.
