Looking at buying a new or nearly new BMW 5 series, either a 525d or 525i SE.
BMW main dealers are quite pricey but looking on autotrader etc there seems to be lots of 525i petrols for sale. Motorprovider had this cracking offer for a nearly new one at £22k. The website says the car has now been sold and at that price i can see why - but why so cheap?
Regarding the two cars has anyone here got one and can they offer any advice. The MPG between the petrol and diesel is 8MPG. How true this will be in real world driving im not sure.
I no the model is about to be replaced but im thinking that I will be able to get a good deal from the current run, instead of opting for a new model where no discount will be available.
thanks

I seem to remember one of the other internet car sellers having the same BMWs at a similar price - they'd been built in 2006.

Unless the 525 is very cheap I would go for the 530 either d or i.
I have a 530d, if I did managed to do less than the 50,000km a year I presently average I would definitely get the 530i. In the real world there is a big difference in fuel consumption. I get just under 1,000km from a tank of diesel in my 530d (67 litres). The 530i I tried struggled to reach 600km but was much nicer to drive with that classic BMW straight six howl at high revs.
The E60 is one of my favourite cars and I never get bored of driving it. I can't wait to see what the F10 (new 5 Series this year) is like.

To the OP I would just point out that whilst the 525d looks appealing (and it is of course!!) the 520d's increase in power at the end of 2007 from 163hp to 177hp puts it so close to the 197hp of the 525d I would question the spending of the extra £3k or so (if memory serves me correctly) of the 525d. Everything else is better, consumption, insurance costs, etc, for so little loss of power. You could start spending that on some attractive options or spend it on whatever else takes your fancy.
Just a thought!

The OP was asking about the diesel 520d and the petrol 525i. He wasn't considering the 525d. But your point is very valid and will help others if they read this thread.

I have read it 3 times now and each time it reads 525d and 525i. Must be my eysight?

Sorry you're right. I'd assumed 520d and 525i.
