Tyre noise - Roger Jones
I am interested in information and opinions about tyre noise. Are some brands much quieter than others or does it come down to the individual spec? I am of course seeking the best combination of performance, quietness and longevity, but I am not unduly concerned about price.

Dear Roger,

Tyre noise depends on at least two factors, one of which is the contact area between the tyre and the road. The bigger this is, the noisier the tyre will be. The other factor is rolling resistance. Pirelli P6000s, Continental Conti Eco Contacts and Michelin Energy are all low rolling resistance tyres which emit less road noise and also help save on fuel.

I had a Citroen BX which made a terrible tyre noise at low speed. The tyres were all apparently in good condition, but changing them cured it. It wass over two years ago, so I can't remember the makes.
