1998 1.8 Boot release problem - Andrew Moorey (Tune-Up)
Customer complained he couldnt release the boot from the inside pressing the button behind the window switches in the handbrake cover. Checked the wiring inside the boot and all ok and the solenoid operates if you give it a direct feed proving solenoid wiring and earth are sound. The switch didnt 'feel' right, no definite 'click' and sure enough had evidently been groisted apart by the previous owner so a new switch was fitted by the current owner who called to say no improvement. The wiring is all lightweight stuff and doesnt match the wiring in the boot. Is there a relay for it somewhere? Owners handbook and AutoData dont mention one.

1998 1.8 Boot release problem - elekie&a/c doctor
If I recall, the boot release system works via the central locking control module in the drivers footwell(to the right of accel pedal).Pressing the boot switch on the console signals the module which in turn will fire the solenoid if all the conditions are met,ie car unlocked ,ignition off.Although you have checked the earth ,I presme with the boot lid up,may be worth checking with lid down just in case the earth is lost. This used to be a common issue on these but was usually caused probs with hrw and rear wiper.hth
1995/8 MK6 Escort 1.6/1.8 Boot release problem - iantruckers

the boot release system works via the central locking control module

I`ve been having problems with my 1995 MK6 1.6 Escort Ghia where the boot release button wouldn`t work. I was sat here at home going through various forums when I came across this forum where thought about where I work as a TV engineer where TV`s nowadays are computers, you have to re-boot a lot of TV`s nowadays because the computer has thrown a wobbly, I thought from reading your posts about the button being connected to the central locking, (computer) maybe I should re- boot it. Hey! I`ve had the battery off for 5 minutes and I`ve now got a working tailgate button. Thankyou Honest John. Ian
