Renault Megane II (2002 - 2008) - Camshaft Defuser. What is this?

Camshaft Defuser. What is this? - Carl2
What is a camshaft defuser? Friend has just had this replaced by Renault out of warranty due to low mileage (would have been £660). I can only guess its what I would call a variator or tensioner.

I guess it's the dephaser pulley - a specially designed camshaft pulley which allows the camshaft timing (phasing) to be altered by the engine management system.

A very common problem. It's a 1.6 petrol, right?

1.6 petrol? yep. Took the spelling mistake from their paperwork otherwise I could have worked it out. Thanks for enlightening me.
