VECTRA 2.0 16V PETROL ECOTEC. does anyone know what purpose the air injection valve serves. the hose that goes to it comes from some sort of circular black box which is mounted behind the battery. Also the hose has went really soft and has almost collapsed. the car has a lack of power and accelleration. there is also a slight humming or droning noise. I had a similar prob with an escort and cleaning a blocked breather cured the noise and improved the performance. i have been around the car and fixed some vaccuum conections and checked the obvious breathers. any one have any more ideas.

To help the cat converter warm up quicker.

as above post but its basically an air pump, if the pipes have nearly collapsed then change them but it wont affect the running that you describe
check that the pipe from mass air flow meter (maf) and the throttle body they split underneath sucking air though the split rather than the maf so the ecu dont know whats happening
i have been around all the obvious connections and repaired a few a while ago. there are no other ones left to check. Could this fault i mentioned earlier be due to a faulty egr valve.
possible egr but they are very reliable on this model don't think that i have ever had problems with these on this model its the later one that cause problems, if you have checked all the obvious then you need to start looking deeper cambelt timming, mass airflow fault, sensor fault (they dont always throw up codes) but worth plugging in and see if anything sticks out in live data
ok thanks. will move on to some of that next then. i think i also have seen the managment light on in a quick flash then of again. it has happened twice that ive noticed. any idea before i move on to the other stuff. thanks
code read is the next move then and a look at the live data while they have it hooked up

I have managed to get a obd 11 code reader but there is a linking proplem with the equipment to the car. it seems the code reader does not recognise the system on the car. do you know if it is an obd 11 system on these vectras.
from memory obd 2 is from year 2000 for petrol and 2002 for diesel so no yours is not obd2
ok thanks for all that. I think a trip to a local garage may be the next thing.
The "paperclip method" will work on yours though, will give basic fault codes.

Cheers DD, too much of a faff trying to copy / paste the link when browsing via phone.
With these fairly rapid flashing 4 digit codes I find it easier to use the video on my phone as a dictation machine and just call them out, rather than trying to write them down.

Thanks for all the help guys. I had just about gave up with it and was going to put it down to a poor engine in these cars. i now have read the probs that meltonlad has with the same car and they are both very similar. 18 - 23 mpg max in town. white smoke ( which i hadnt really paid much attention to before). power seems down about 20 - 30%.
Also most times when i turn on the ign before the car is started there is a sort of rumbling niose which will last about 10 - 20 sec and then goes away. going to check the inlet and ex gaskets and then do a compression test to try to get to the bottom of it. or any one else with any more ideas. thanks
